What The Israeli Left Doesn’t Understand

This morning I was struck by comments coming from the Israeli Left. One commentator wrote: “Israel must [act now] in order to prevent a new, possibly unprecedented deterioration in our ties with the U.N. and the entire global theater.” In another instance, 40 former leftist members of the defense establishment have offered up yet another recycled peace plan based on the discredited notion of land for peace (including ‘returning’ the Golan Heights)  because, according to Former Shin Bet chief Yaakov Peri: “We are isolated internationally and seen to be against peace. . . It is about time that Israel initiates something on peace.”

“A new, possibly unprecedented deterioration in our ties with the U.N.?” Is the Israeli Left living on the moon? The United Nations has been virtually unanimous in its condemnation of Israel for decades. Just this morning, the infamous U.N. Human Rights Council issued a statement declaring that it stands by the original Goldstone Report no matter what second thoughts Richard Goldstone may now have.  In September, the United Nations will vote almost unanimously to create a state of Palestine based on the 1967 borders.

“We are isolated internationally and seen to be against peace. . . It is about time that Israel initiates something on peace.” How many times does peace have to be offered to the Palestinians? How many plans do the Palestinians have to reject for the Israeli Left to get the message? Rabin? Barak? Olmert? Does the Israeli Left have a memory span of 15 minutes?

To put it simply, the Left has lost all credibility in Israel because it does not understand that no matter what Israel does, no matter what peace plan it offers, no matter what ideas are initiated, Israel will never do enough to appease the Palestinians or the international Left–groups that will never be satisfied with anything less than the elimination of Israel. Fortunately, after all of the wars that Israel has fought for survival and all of the terrorist attacks that Israel has endured for decades, most Israeli citizens get the message–and they get it ‘loud and clear’.
