The Top 10 Israeli Stories of 2011

TODAY’S BLOG

As 2011 draws to an end today, your humble servant thought that he would review this year’s blogs and tell you what he thinks were the top 10 stories of this past year (in reverse order of importance):

10. The End Of The Peace Process With The Palestinians

Let’s all be honest. There is no peace process with the Palestinians. Despite all Israeli attempts to woo the PLO back to the negotiating table, it hasn’t happened–and will not happen. The PLO is as committed to the destruction of Israel as ever. Why is this number 10? Because it is nothing new.

9. The Arab Spring That Wasn’t And Isn’t

Let’s all be honest again. The Arab Spring has not brought democracy–it has brought and is bringing an Islamist takeover of north Africa and the Middle East. Why is this number 9? Because anyone with any sense could have seen this coming.

8. The Slaughter of the Fogel Family in Itamar

The stabbing butchery of Ruth and Udi Fogel and their three children served as reminder to all of the barbaric nature of our Palestinian enemies. This horrific event would have been ranked higher were it not for the fact that we already know the barbaric nature of our enemies.

7. The Imprisonment of Gilad Shalit and His Subsequent Release

The continuing trauma of Shalit’s being held prisoner by the Palestinian terrorists in Gaza wracked all of Israel up until the time of his release–at which time the exchange of so many vicious criminals traumatized Israelis again.

6. The Ongoing Tete a Tete Between the Obama Administration and the Netanyahu Coalition

The relationship between Washington and Jerusalem was a continuing roller-coaster in 2011 with the Obama Administration alternately castigating PM Netanyahu for continuing construction in Jewish communities, and providing Israel support in terms of funding and fighting against anti-Israel resolutions in the United Nations.

5. The Continuing Attempts of ‘Leftist Groups’ and Foreign NGOs  To Delegitimize Israel

2011 saw leftist groups such as BDS, J Street, the European Union, Kadima, the New Israel Fund–and many other NGOs doing everything within their power to bring down the Netanyahu government and in the process delegitimize Israel.

4. The Palestinian Attempt To Obtain Statehood At The United Nations

This probably could have been placed with number 1 above, but deserves its own place on the list just because of the time and effort invested by the Israeli government in combatting the proposed resolution.

3. The Increasing Divide Between Jewish Community members in Judea and Samaria,  the Ultra Orthodox, and the Other Parts of Israeli Society

This is an extremely important development within Israeli society that will have long range ramifications. Be sure to note the actual divides are between:

the orthodox Jewish community members in Judea and Samaria with many secular Israelis

and

the ultra-orthodox, anti-Zionist Jews in Israel with everyone else–including the orthodox

2. The Summer Marches for “Social Justice”

All of Israel was tuned in to Israeli TV during the summer as hundreds of thousands marched for social justice in Israel. Your humble servant did not devote much blogspace to these marches because he thought (and still thinks) that they were greatly exaggerated by the Israeli media–and because they were financed and somewhat planned by leftist groups outside of Israel). How long lasting the effects of the marches will be seen over the coming months and years.

1. The Continued Launching of Terrorist Missiles At The Residents of Southern Israel

In your humble servant’s opinion, this was the most important story of 2011. The continuing rocket fire has exposed the IDF’s weakness in general and fear of Hamas in particular, subjected the men, women, and children of southern Israel to needless physical and mental trauma, and exacerbated a geographical rift in Israeli society with south pitted against central and north.
