The Vatican: A Hypocritical Mouthpiece For the PLO In Jerusalem

NUMBER OF TERRORIST MISSILES AND MORTARS SHOT AT SOUTHERN ISRAEL SINCE THE CEASEFIRE AGREED TO BY BENJAMIN NETANYAHU ON NOVEMBER 21, 2012:

34

UPDATES 10 am Israel time Sunday:

**There have now been 34 Hamas rockets fired at southern Israel since the so-called ceasefire with Hamas went into effect 10 days ago. In addition, there has been one murderous Hamas terrorist attack inside the border Israeli community of Sde Avraham, gross violations of the extended maritime fishing border by Hamas fishermen, and daily and nightly Hamas mob attacks on the border fence.

Your humble servant mentions all of these because Hamas unbelievably filed a complaint with Egypt yesterday concerning thirteen so-called “Israeli violations” of the ceasefire. This was followed up by an Islamic Jihad statement that it cannot let the Israeli violations continue and will soon take action against Israel at a time and a place of its choosing.

It simply defies credulity.

**In the parade of speakers at the ultra-leftist Saban Forum in Washington, D.C. yesterday, it was somewhat difficult to judge who was the most nauseating–but two particular speakers stood out.

Haim Saban flanked by Tzipi Livni and Hillary Clinton: the event featured a who's who of leftist Israelis and Americans who are united in their support of the PLO.

Was it Hillary Clinton when she lamented over and over “if only Yitzhak Rabin had lived, Israel would have had peace with the Palestinians” (never mind that Yasser Arafat ordered the Palestinian suicide bombing campaign to begin before Rabin’s death)?  Or was it Clinton when she revealed that “peacemaker” Yasser Arafat had actually accepted Ehud Barak’s peace offer–albeit belatedly? Or was it Clinton when she asserted that despite the fact that PLO Chief Mahmoud Abbas (aka ‘Abu Mazen’) “took a step in the wrong direction this week”, Israel nevertheless must support Abbas because he is “committed to peace”?

Actually, in your humble servant’s opinion, the Israelstreet Award for Nausea goes to Ehud Olmert (who attended the Forum flanked by his fellow lefties Ehud Barak and Tzipi Livni)Olmert almost brought the room to tears with his anguished self-serving drivel about how he tried to make peace with the Palestinians:

“I know how close I was to achieve peace with the Palestinians, but circumstances prevented it. It breaks my heart because I know that nothing is more important for the future of Israel than peace with the Palestinians. It was a difficult moment in my life when I sat with Abu Mazen, and as a man who fought for Jerusalem his complete life, I said I was prepared to withdraw Arab neighborhoods so that they would  become the capital of Palestine. I promised that other areas would be under the supervision of an international force.”

“I. . .I. . .I. . .I. . .I”. . .

“How close I was to achieve peace with the Palestinians”?  Abbas never even gave Olmert the courtesy of a reply.

A difficult moment in his life? Olmert was happily ready to relinquish Israeli sovereignty over the Old City of Jerusalem to a motley consortium of Palestinians, Saudis, Jordanians, Americans, and “left-wing” Israelis.  He still is.

TODAY’S BLOG:

Catholics worshiping at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Israel has always zealously protected the right of Catholics to worship in Jerusalem, but the same cannot be said of the Vatican defending the right of Jews to worship in Jerusalem.

Speaking of Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem . . .

Following up on its Thursday vote to make “Palestine” a non-member observer state, the United Nations General Assembly on Friday actually passed a resolution demanding that Israel declare that Jerusalem is not Israel’s capital–as a precondition to beginning “peace” talks with the Palestinians.

Can you even imagine this? How can the United Nations attempt to tell a member state where its capital should be? How can the United Nations presume to tell Israel, which established its capital in Jerusalem over 3000 years ago, that it now must relinquish sovereignty over that capital?

The resolution shows of course why no one in Israel (except for politicians) cares any more about anything that the United Nations says.  Simply speaking, the U.N. is nothing more than a propaganda mouthpiece for the PLO.

Nevertheless, the General Assembly resolution about Jerusalem is part of a brazen new campaign to remove Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem–a campaign which is being headed up by another PLO mouthpiece, the Vatican.

Here was the Vatican announcement on Friday that accompanied the U.N. resolution on Thursday (click hear for the entire document):

“. . . the Holy See welcomes with favour the decision of the General Assembly by which Palestine has become a Non-member Observer State of the United Nations. It is a propitious occasion to recall also the common position that the Holy See and the Palestinian Liberation Organisation expressed in the Basic Agreement of 15 February 2000, intended to support the recognition of a internationally guaranteed special statute for the City of Jerusalem, and aimed, in particular, to safeguarding the freedom of religion and of conscience, the identity and sacred character of Jerusalem as a Holy City, respect for and freedom of access to its Holy Places.

The hypocrisy embodied in this Vatican statement in regard to Jerusalem and its holy places is so staggering as to boggle the mind.

Perhaps a brief historical refresher course is in order:

1. In 1948, when the Jordanians, Palestinians, and other Arabs captured the Jewish Quarter, the first thing they did was to ethnically cleanse the Old City of Jerusalem of every Jew. Fifty eight synagogues were destroyed, and every other Jewish site was desecrated. No Jews were permitted inside the Old City to worship or to do anything else. Jews could not even visit Jewish graves on the Mt. of Olives. There was no safeguarding of the freedom of religion and conscience whatsoever.

2. From 1948 to 1967, at a time when the Arabs permitted only Muslims and Christians to worship in the Old City, Israel repeatedly pleaded with the Vatican to intercede on behalf of Jews everywhere to be allowed to worship in the Old City. Every plea to the Vatican was met with deaf ears. At no time during these nineteen years did the Vatican make even the slightest attempt to safeguard Jewish freedom of religion and conscience.

3. When Israel reunited Jerusalem in 1967, it immediately moved to safeguard the freedom of religion for every person–even going so ridiculously far as to permit the Islamic Wakf (consisting mainly of Palestinians and Jordanians) to control Judaism’s holiest place, the Temple Mount. For the last 45 years, the tiny Christian community of Jerusalem (which currently consists of approximately 4500 Catholics, 3500 Greek Orthodox, 1500 Armenian Orthodox, 850 Protestants, and 2600 Christian monks and clergymen) has experienced complete and unprecedented freedom to worship.  There is only one place in the Old City where Jews and Christians cannot worship freely–and that is on the Temple Mount.

In sum, the Vatican is no friend of Israel and never has been. Yet in spite of the Vatican’s antipathy and antagonism, Israel has always made extraordinary attempts to accommodate the Catholic Church in Jerusalem–most recently in an absurd decision to grant the Vatican “partial sovereignty” over the supposed room of the Last Supper which happens to be above the supposed burial site of King David.

The supposed room of Jesus' Last Supper located above the supposed Tomb of King David.

Now that the Vatican is operating in open support of the PLO (and Iran and the Hezbollah, click here to read of the Vatican-Iran-Hezbollah connection), Israel should immediately recall its ambassador to the Catholic entity and consider suspending diplomatic relations altogether.
