The Checkpoints in Judea and Samaria Must Be Immediately Reinstituted

NUMBER OF DAYS UNTIL THE ISRAELI ELECTION: 25

ISRAELSTREET endorses NAFTALI BENNETT for Prime Minister

Head of “HaBayit HaYehudi” (The Jewish Home) political party

UPDATES 5:00 pm Israel time Wednesday:

As typically happens, Israeli politics is getting down and dirty and taking twisting turns as the election approaches.

*Israel’s Election Commission has fined Likud Beiteinu, and three Israeli newspapers (Yediot Aharonot, the Jerusalem Post, and Haaretz) for running “anonymous” advertisements against Naftali Bennett’s Jewish Home Party. All of the advertisements criticized Bennett for his comment that an IDF soldier should be able to voice a “conscientious objection” to an order.

By the way, the newest poll overnight shows Bennett’s party making the largest gains (+4)–mainly at the expense of Likud Beiteinu (-3) which has been cutting its own throat by attacking Bennett.

*An intensely disturbing report appeared yesterday that Tzipi Livni and Benjamin Netanyahu are in talks (through surrogates) about Livni possibly receiving the Foreign Minister position in a new Coalition government.

In your humble servant’s opinion, whatever these contacts reveal about Benjamin Netanyahu is unclear–but whatever it is, is not good. Heaven forbid that Tzipi Livni should ever be in a Likud Beiteinu Coalition–much less become an Israel Foreign Minister.

*The Sephardic Orthodox party Shas, to no one’s great surprise, has announced today that it will join Netanyahu in a new Coalition government while at the same time castigating Netanyahu for his disregard for “the poor” in Israeli society.

TODAY’S BLOG:

It was just a “small” story this morning.

A young Israeli mother was driving her car along the road north of Ofra near Silwad.  Her infant child was strapped into a car seat in the back seat. Palestinian terrorists suddenly appeared and attacked her car with large “rocks.”

The “rocks” shattered the car’s rear windows and landed in the back seat along with hundreds of glass shards. However, in what security forces are describing as “a miracle”, neither the baby nor the mother were physically injured–though one can only imagine what emotional trauma they both suffered.

At last report, the IDF and civilian security forces were combing the area for the perpetrators.

It is long past time for the Israeli government and IDF to act to stop attacks like this. Many of the roads of Judea and Samaria have become minefields with Palestinian terrorists lurking around every corner. Whether one makes it through the minefield has become a matter of random chance.

And why has this happened? One of the main reasons is that the Netanyahu government, in an absurd attempt to placate so-called international “human rights” organizations, has put Israeli lives in jeopardy by easing restrictions on Palestinian travel throughout Judea and Samaria. Checkpoints have been eliminated with the result that Palestinian terrorists are now free to roam the highways and byways with impunity.

Note in the image above the two lower black horseshoe-shaped symbols on the road north of Ofra–between Ofra and Silwad. These are two of the checkpoints that were removed in the last year. Between these two former checkpoints is precisely where the incident occurred today.

What should the government do? Immediately reinstitute the checkpoints. Install “anti-rock” barriers within Arab communities that the roads pass through. Put IDF heavier patrols on the roads.

The status quo is untenable. It is just a matter of time until another Israeli motorist and his or her children are killed.
