2012 Comes To A Close With No Peace In Sight

NUMBER OF DAYS UNTIL THE ISRAELI ELECTION: 22

ISRAELSTREET endorses NAFTALI BENNETT for Prime Minister

Head of “HaBayit HaYehudi” (The Jewish Home) political party

UPDATE 5 pm Israel time Monday:

It is always striking to your humble servant how organizations that describe themselves as “human rights” organizations are only interested in the “human rights” of Palestinians. Today, the so-called “Rabbis for Human Rights” group announced that four days ago it had planted 35 olive trees in the Palestinian settlement of Qusra, north of Ramallah.

According to the “rabbis”, the trees are meant to replace those chopped down by “Jewish extremists.” More than this, a “rabbis” spokesman said: “We are planting hope where extremists are planting despair.”

What utter nonsense.

Where are the “rabbis” when Israelis are attacked, wounded, and killed? Where were the rabbis last month–and during the last decade–when rockets were hitting southern Israel? Nowhere to be seen.

Where were the “Rabbis” this morning and afternoon as Israelis were attacked with “rocks” and Molotov cocktails? Again, they were nowhere to be seen. After all, as most of the “human rights” organizations think, Israelis have no human rights.

TODAY’S BLOG:

Another year has come and gone, and we find ourselves no nearer to any accommodation with the Palestinians. 2012 was a year in which Israel reached out in a myriad of ways to make gestures of peace to the PLO and to Hamas. In each case, as always, Israel was rebuffed: the PLO ultimately went to the United Nations to receive “non member observer state” status, and Hamas ultimately intensified its ongoing missile war against southern Israel.

Your humble servant thought it might be interesting on this last day of 2012 to take a look at two documents from 2008 which were obtained by WikiLeaks–documents that show the absurdly generous offer made by Ehud Olmert to Abu Mazen (Mahmoud Abbas) back in 2008, and the extraordinary lack of Palestinian response to that offer.

Hala Rashed (the author of document one) and Zeinah Salahi (the author of the second document) were Arab-Americans working under Palestinian Chief Negotiator Saeb Erekat to record all meetings.

Document one*:

The amazing fact of this document is that the Palestinians did not even consider the Israeli offer.

What were the primary Palestinian concerns? To look at the Israeli offer constructively? To consider that they could finally have a Palestinian state? To realize that there might finally be peace between Israelis and Palestinians?

The answer is none of the above.

All the Palestinians thought about was how to say “no” without being “blamed.” And to be sure that any offer (“submission”) they made could be “retracted.”

Document 2*:

Again note the absolute unwillingness of the Palestinians to “negotiate”: a map “shown but not given”, “an ambiguous answer”, an “outright no.”

What is the lesson of 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012? The same lesson as in each of the 64 years of modern Israel’s existence–peace with the Palestinians is impossible because the Palestinians do not want a state of their own; they want the state of Israel.
