“Palestinians Will Outnumber Jews In Israel By 2020” (NOT)

NUMBER OF DAYS UNTIL THE ISRAELI ELECTION: 19

Head of “HaBayit HaYehudi” (The Jewish Home) political party

UPDATES 5 pm Israel time Thursday:

Widespread “rock” throwing incidents in the last 24 hours have taken place in such locations as Tekoa and Ofra. IDF forces were attacked in Jenin early this afternoon by dozens of Palestinians hurling “rocks”, Molotov cocktails, and burning tires. No soldiers were wounded but additional IDF troops had to be called in to evacuate the soldiers who were already there.

In the face of these Palestinian attacks, the IDF and Border Guard absurdly returned to the fledgling Oz Zion Jewish community to raze the last building standing after the eviction of two days ago.

The latest Geocartography Institute poll released today has Likud Beiteinu at 35 seats, Labor 18 seats, and Jewish Home 17.5 seats. The results are similar to an Israel Radio poll released today that show Jewish Home with 18 seats. In both polls, the Tzipi Livni party has dropped to around 7 or 8 seats, and the Powerful Israel party has risen to 5 seats. Shelly Yachimovich, the leader of the Labor party has announced this afternoon that Labor will not join a Netanyahu-led coalition.

TODAY’S BLOG:

“Palestinians Will Outnumber Jews in Israel by 2020” blared the preposterous headline around the world yesterday.

Produced by the laughingly called “Palestinian Bureau of Statistics”, the “article” that followed was an unsurprising concoction attempting to influence Israeli voters to vote for the “center-Left” parties by demonstrating the need for the creation of a Palestinian state (“unsurprising” because the Palestinian Bureau of Statistics often works in tandem with the Israeli “Left”):

“JERUSALEM – The Palestinian statistics bureau estimates that Arabs will outnumber Jews in the Holy Land by the end of the decade, a scenario that could have grave implications for Israel.

The bureau said Tuesday that 5.8 million Arabs live in Israel, the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem. That compares to about 6 million Israeli Jews, according to Israeli data. It said that based on current birth rates, the two populations would be equal in 2016, and in 2020, Arabs would outnumber Jews by 7.2 million to 6.9 million.

The demographic issue is a main argument for Israeli backers of creation of a Palestinian state. They say that relinquishing control of the Palestinian territories and its residents is the only way to ensure Israel’s future as a democracy with a Jewish majority.”

The only problem with this Palestinian “statistical” report is that there are no real statistics; like every report that is produced by the Palestinian Bureau of Statistics, it is ridiculously unscientific and hopelessly flawed.

To begin with, what is “Israel”?

Your humble servant is surprised to see that the Palestinians now want to include “the West Bank”, “east Jerusalem”, and Gaza in Israel. “East Jerusalem” is part of Israel, but Israel exited Gaza more than half a decade ago, and your humble servant always thought that “the West Bank” was supposed to be subject to negotiations. I guess not.

Second, the Palestinians now want to include Israeli-Arabs as “Palestinians”? This is probably news to the Bedouins, Druse, and folks in Nazareth and elsewhere who are loyal Israeli citizens.

Third, the Bureau declares that 5.8 million Arabs live “in Israel, the West Bank, Gaza, and east Jerusalem.” While we do know how many Arabs live in Israel and “East Jerusalem” (1.6 million) because there is an Israeli census that actually counts them, no one knows how many Arabs live in “the West Bank” and Gaza because there is no census and the Palestinian Bureau relies solely on estimates.

Those estimates regularly include so-called “Palestinian refugees” living outside “the West Bank”–and thus are significantly inflated. According to such institutions as the World Bank, the Palestinians regularly exaggerate their numbers by at least 30%.

“Palestinians will outnumber Jews in Israel by 2020”? The latest numbers released by the Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics this week reveal a far different set of facts. There are more than 8 million people now living in Israel: 6,015,000 are Jews and 1,648,000 are Arabs (the remaining number belong to different ethnic groups).

With a declining Arab birthrate and an ever-increasing Jewish birthrate because of the increasing number of orthodox and ultra-orthodox, the gap between the number of Jews and Arabs in Israel is beginning to grow.

That is good news.
