8:00 am UPDATES

***Another day of egregious Palestinian terror yesterday:

There were 6 stabbings or attempted stabbings: at 9:41 am, Border Police thwarted an attack at the Tapuach Junction (no Israelis were wounded); at 9:56 am, an Israeli was seriously wounded in Gush Etzion near Metzad–the terrorists who were disguised as orthodox Jews escaped; at 10:06 am, police captured a knife-armed terrorist on a bus near Kibbutz Gesher, between Beit Shean and Tiberias; at 1:38 pm, a knife-wielding Palestinian terrorist was shot and killed as she charged the Tzalbanit roadblock near the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron; at 5:12 pm, an Israeli was critically wounded at the Ariel Junction; the terrorist was finally captured in the evening; at 9:45 pm, a Palestinian woman with a knife was captured at a train station in central Tel Aviv.

Following the “successful” Molotov firebombing of the car in Samaria two days ago in which a three-year-old Israeli girl was badly burned, Palestinians have increased their Molotov attacks. Yesterday there were attempts to set Israelis on fire at Hawara, Silwan, Halhul (a bus was set on fire), on Road 443, at Bani Na’im, and in Hebron. Miraculously, especially in the case of Halhul, no Israelis were physically wounded.

There was also a major shooting attack last night just after 10 pm at the Schneerson compound in Hebron. Again, miraculously, no one was wounded by the terrorists.

There were too many “rock” attacks and riots to mention here. A number of Israelis including soldiers were wounded by “rocks” and other projectiles.

***Some very good news . . .

Do you remember the female Israeli Border Guard, Dikla Megadish, who was gravely wounded when she was stabbed repeatedly at Kikar Adam several days ago?

When MADA paramedics arrived on the scene, they thought she was dead and could find no pulse–but they managed to resuscitate her and get her to a hospital–where emergency surgery stopped the massive internal bleeding she had from multiple stab wounds.

In the last 72 hours, Dikla has staged an amazing recovery, and had this picture taken yesterday with the MADA paramedics who saved her life:

***Some more good news . . . and lest you think that all of the stabbing victims are Jews . . .

You may remember that two weeks ago, two Palestinian terrorists armed with knives and guns entered a bus in the East Talpiot section of Jerusalem. They killed two older Jewish men, and critically wounded four others.

One of those critically wounded was Marike Veldman, a Christian from the Netherlands who has spent much of her life promoting coexistence in Jerusalem, first as a nurse at Hadassah Hospital, then as the founder of a foster home for Palestinian children of whom she has raised more than 20 herself. She has even written a book on the subject in Dutch: “Pleegmoeder in Jeruzalem.”

Yesterday she recounted what happened to her: “I felt something was not right . . . A hundred meters after [the driver took them on the bus], they were shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ and the person in front of me began to stab me with a knife. The other person started shooting. People were shouting loudly. It was terrible. I cried non-stop in Dutch, ‘Lord Jesus, Lord Jesus! Help me, help me!”

Marike suffered multiple stab wounds to her chest, shoulder, and wrist but had recovered enough yesterday to have this picture taken:

TODAY’S BLOG:

Believe it or not, your humble servant is sitting here in my house in Ashdod this morning at 6 am listening to the news that is blaring out of an city transit bus which is at a bus stop about 100 meters away. Who got stabbed? Where did the terror attack occur? Is my family safe?

Sometimes it seems almost surreal here in Israel. People are glued to their radios at the top of every hour to listen to the latest terror report. And if they don’t have a radio, the bus, the store in the mall, the taxi, and any one of a hundred other places has one. Who got stabbed? Where did the terror attack occur? Is my family safe?

And yet, as it has for centuries in the face of massacres, pogroms, and killings, Jewish life fights on. You just get on with it as best you can. You can never let the terrorists win; you fight back by living as normal a life as you can.

Yesterday, normal life here took an interesting turn as Israel was socked by a huge storm that came in from the sea and hit the country hard. Even as of this time this morning, large swaths of Israel are without power–including such cities as Kfar Saba.

If you take a look at the following picture melange put together by Yael Cohen of 0404, you can get some small idea of what happened:

As you can see, tennis ball sized hail hit parts of Israel--smashing car windows and the roofs of houses.

Here in Ashdod, trees were blown down all over the city, and many of the residential neighborhoods lost power.

Throughout Israel, there was much flooding which caused numerous roads to be closed temporarily–including coastal Highway 4. The Negev and the south were especially hard hit by flash floods: Mitzpe Ramon received 24 ml of rain–and Eilat 25 ml.

All in all, it seemed like winter arrived in Israel yesterday. Even though we currently have sunshine and blue skies, meteorologists tell us to expect more rain by noon.
