UPDATES: 7:00 pm, Israel time

–>Palestinian terror today.

Palestinians have rioted attacking Israeli security forces at Beit Furik, Issawiya, the Beit Safafa and Ras Al-Amud neighborhoods of Jerusalem, Azaria, Abu Dis, Benjamin, Rachel’s Tomb, Gush Etzion, and Qalqilya where Palestinians were shot while attacking Israeli forces.

Some of the worst riots have taken place along the Gaza Border especially just across from Nahal Oz. At least 3 Palestinians attempting to infiltrate into Israel were shot and wounded by IDF soldiers. In an interesting aside, the Egyptian Army also fired on Hamas terrorists along the Egyptian border with Gaza near Rafah.

And, as always, there have been tens of “rock” and Molotov attacks targeting Israeli men, women, and children in such places as Chayot, Deir Abu Mash’al, Hizma, Shuafat, and Husan.

–>Hamas prepares for war.

A senior officer in the IDF Gaza Division made this unbelievable comment yesterday to officials of kibbutzes and moshavs along the Gaza border:

“Hamas in Gaza is now at the point where it has completely rehabilitated itself and is willing to begin a campaign against Israel. It has restored the tunnels, its rocket system, its intelligence gathering, its observation points, and in fact is ready for war.”

Remember how PM Netanyahu and our so-called “Defense” Minister Moshe Ya’alon crowed a mere sixteen months ago at the end of the last war with Hamas that Hamas tunnels into Israel had been completely destroyed, and its missile inventory severely reduced? And that Hamas would not be ready for war for another decade?

What has happened during the last sixteen months to bring us to this point? Israel has allowed tons of tunnel building and rocket making materials into Gaza.

–>Obama’s push to close down Guantanamo.

Not usually noted is the fact that the continual release and transfer of prisoners from Guantanamo has dangerous repercussions for Israelis as well as for citizens of other countries.

Today, Tariq Mahmoud Ahmed al-Sawah was released from the prison and transferred to Bosnia.

What is al-Sawah’s area of expertise? Building improvised explosive devices for use against Israeli soldiers and citizens.

In addition to al-Sawah, the Pentagon also transferred another bombmaker out of Guantanamo today–Abed al-Aziz Abdullah. A native of Yemen, Abdullah is being sent to Montenegro.

–>Speaking of Obama Administration idiocy.

John Kerry appeared this morning to proclaim that in the last 3 days Iran has not funneled any of the $100 billion dollars released to it to “what are labeled as terrorist entities.”

“What are labeled”? They are not labeled as terrorist entities–they are terrorists.

Kerry continued: “But I’m sure we will see the money going to those groups in the future.”

Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic.

TODAY’S BLOG:

This israelstreet blog is often harshly critical of Moshe Ya’alon, whom we refer to as Israel’s “so-called Defense” Minister.

Your humble servant felt that Ya’alon’s performance in the last war with Hamas was reprehensible and put a million Israelis in southern Israel in immediate life-threatening danger, and that his tactics along Israel’s other borders are dangerously misguided.

But nowhere is Ya’alon more repugnant than in his actions in Judea and Samaria.

His recent campaign against Jewish teenagers continues to deny those teenagers the most basic civil rights.  His continual demolition of Jewish communities and buildings within Jewish communities lacks even a semblance of human decency.

And so, it has come as no surprise that his handling of the building in Hebron in the last 48 hours smacks of the same methods that mark his other actions.

Let’s recall for a moment what has taken place.

Back in 2009, Jews in Hebron and elsewhere purchased a building near the Cave of the Patriarchs from Palestinians who owned it. The building contains some 20 apartments large enough to house more than 100 people.

The Palestinians living in the building evacuated the premises. It has remained empty for almost half a decade as Ya’alon has refused to give the Jews permission to enter their own homes.

Yesterday, about 300 young activists took matters into their own hands and decided to take up residence in the building. They said they were doing so in response to the heinous murder of Daphna Meir in Otniel last week.

Immediately, Moshe Ya’alon appeared in front of a camera and proclaimed that he had “doubts” as to whether the purchase of the building back in 2009 was legitimate.

This morning, Ya’alon ordered the IDF to enter the building to evict the Jews. But this morning, his tune had changed. No longer did he claim that the purchase of the building was illegitimate, now he declared that the Jews had not followed the “appropriate series of steps” necessary to take possession of the building.

Appropriate series of steps? Ya’alon has had six years to review the purchase. His actions this morning are ludicrous in the extreme.

Nevertheless, the Jews in the building (mostly children and teenagers) left the building with virtually no resistance today.

Ya’alon’s action has initiated a firestorm in Israel. On the right, people like Naftali Bennett have lambasted Ya’alon. On the left there is rejoicing because the Palestinians have been appeased and the heroic Jews living in Judea and Samaria have been delegitimized.

Uber-leftist Tzipi Livni preened: “Judea and Samaria will not be controlled by the wild west hilltop youth.”

Yesterday was a great day when Jews moved into the building, but as Hebron resident Baruch Marzel said: “Today is a black day for Israel.”

Two steps forward, and one step backward.
