A Pardon for Azariya? Not likely.

Palestinian terror in the last 48 hours

Palestinian terrorists have been very active over the last two days. More than 40 attacks have been reported.

Most serious are the ongoing shooting attacks in Haifa which have already resulted in one Israeli being murdered and others wounded. The police seem no closer to tracking down the terrorists responsible.

Elsewhere, there was an attack in Beersheva this morning in which a terrorist attacked a security guard and ran away after stealing his gun. He was later captured.

In addition, there have been almost too many “rock” and Molotov attacks to mention such as: on Road 443 numerous incidents, at the Elias Junction near Mt. Hevron, at Neve Dvash, Makel, Hawara (multiple attacks), Beit Horon, Al-Khader (victims treated for trauma), the Husan Bypass Road, Deir Nizam, Turmus’ayya, Beit Fajar, Rachel’s Tomb, Abu Dis, Hizma, Al Fawwar, Kiryat Arba, and Hevron.

The police continue their neverending witchhunt of Netanyahu

Days after being absolved of wrongdoing on 4 counts by Attorney General Mandelblit, PM Netanyahu found himself once again being interrogated by the Israeli police this evening.

Another possible charge of having received “thousands of dollars” in benefits from two businessmen is the subject of this particular probe.

I say “this particular probe” because there is apparently no end to probes of Netanyahu.

TODAY’S BLOG:

A Pardon for Azariya? Not likely.

Today’s blog is a short one.

As we noted in yesterday’s blog, “to say that the public is outraged about the verdict is an understatement.” Protests continued today, and a number of people have been arrested after threatening the judges and prosecutor.

Also, there has been a groundswell of support, led by PM Netanyahu, for a presidential pardon from President Reuven Rivlin for Azariya. One poll yesterday showed that a vast majority of Israelis support a pardon.

Your humble servant believes that the chance for such a pardon is somewhere between slim and none. It is useful to recall that after the incident took place last year, Rivlin issued this statement on March 26:

“I am able to rest much better at night with the knowledge that Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot is the bearer of Israel’s security. I have full faith in him and in the IDF, in its officers and soldiers. I trust in the military’s ability to investigate, and attentively and swiftly draw operational and individual lessons wherever needed.”

Rivlin’s comment came after Eisenkot had already made prejudicial remarks against Azariya.

To think that Rivlin will suddenly change his spots is simply not supported by Rivlin’s own statements.

Your humble servant predicted long ago that Azariya would be convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to time already served. I continue to hope that “time served” will indeed be the sentence, but judging from the harshness and unreasonableness of the verdict yesterday, it would seem that the IDF is determined to exact a longer term of punishment.
