We still have $1000 to go to reach that goal.

Quote of the Day:

“The rules of the game are about to change. We will no longer accept the terror of fire and the terror of fences.”

Yoav Galant, member of the government’s so-called “Security Cabinet”

Is Galant’s statement yesterday more bluster or does it reflect a new reality? With an “inSecurity” cabinet dominated by PM Netanyahu, one can only suppose that this is more bluster. Apparently, at the most recent cabinet meeting two nights ago, Netanyahu insisted that the IDF response will only be proportionate to “developments on the ground.”

To put this a different way, Israel’s actions will remain completely “reactive” insofar as Palestinian Gaza is concerned. Far be it from Netanyahu to ever order a proactive strike against terrorists in Gaza like he orders against Iranian and Hezbollah forces in Syria. It is a perplexing facet of Netanyahu’s personality that he is willing to take on Iran, but unwilling to take on Hamas.

In the meantime, Israel seems to be preparing for a wider war. Numerous pictures yesterday showed Israeli tanks and armored personnel carriers being moved into position on the Gaza border.

IDF tanks in position near the Gaza border yesterday.

Even more ominous perhaps was the decision to change the landing and take-off patterns of airplanes at Ben Gurion airport.

If Galant is actually stating reality, we will know by this afternoon. Hamas has called on tens of thousands of its foot soldiers to assault the fence again. In fact, they have never stopped; there were more such assaults yesterday and last night. Nor have incendiary balloon launches halted; yesterday, incendiary devices from Gaza were found as far north as Moshav Ahi’ezer beside Ben Gurion Airport.

The News On the Israeli Street

Hamas continues to dissemble about its missile fire . . .

As you will recall, Hamas claimed two days ago that the missiles fired at Beersheva and Bat Yam (upgraded Fajr 3 rockets) were a misfire caused by lightning in the area at the time.

Yesterday, senior Hamas spokesman Mahmoud Al-Zahar said that they weren’t a misfire after all; they were fired by elements of the PLO operating in Gaza.

Some hours later, it was reported that Hamas now believes that the missiles were fired by Israel (yes, you read that correctly), or by Palestinian groups connected with Israel (yes, you read that correctly).

The U.S. takes another step in Jerusalem . . .

The former US consulate on Agron Street in downtown Jerusalem--now the de facto American Embassy.

The former US consulate on Agron Street in downtown Jerusalem–now the de facto American Embassy.

The Trump Administration, via Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, announced yesterday that the American consulate in east Jerusalem which mainly handles the visa applications of Palestinian-Americans will close.

The U.S. will continue to have a department that handles Palestinian-American affairs, but it will be located along with all other departments that handle Israeli affairs in the U.S. Diplomatic Mission on Agron Street–formerly known as the American consulate in West Jerusalem.

In point of fact, that building on Agron Street across from Independence Park has become the de facto American Embassy in Israel until the new embassy is ready.

In a blog earlier this year, your humble servant suggested that the easiest move for the U.S. to make was simply to take down the U.S. Consulate sign on Agron St. and replace it with a U.S. Embassy sign.

Knesset Representative and former Israeli Ambassador to the U.S., Michael Oren lauded the closure and move in this tweet: “A great day for Israel, Jerusalem, and the United States. SoS Pompeo’s announcement closing the U.S. consulate in Jerusalem and transferring its responsibilities to the embassy ends the last vestige of American support for the city’s division. Israel is deeply grateful.”

Speaking of Palestinian-Americans . . .

Do you remember the news we posted here on israelstreet on October 12 about a Palestinian’s sale of a property in eastern Jerusalem to Jews? In that news piece we wrote:

“. . . either the man will be arrested by the PLO and executed, or he will be killed by local Arabs.”

Guess what happened to him yesterday?

He was arrested by the PLO and is being “interrogated.”

It turns out the man was a Palestinian-American from Ramallah who was a former employee of the Ministry for Local Government. The PLO has refused to comment on his whereabouts, and has refused to comment on the fact that he is an American citizen. Whether he actually sold the land or facilitated the sale remains unknown at this time.

Israel’s High Court of “Injustice” Hands BDS A Great Victory

It was a completely predictable decision yesterday. From the moment that Israel’s ultra-left wing High Court of Injustice decided that it would hear the appeal of the despicable Lara Al-Qasem, we all knew what the result would be.

We knew that despite her continuous work over the years delegitimizing Israel, despite her open advocacy of the BDS boycott against Israel, despite her presidency (2016-17) of the University of Florida of Students for Justice in Palestine which regularly accuses Israel of apartheid and hosts anti-Israel demonstrations on its campus, despite all of this, we knew that the sickeningly leftist judges would welcome her into Israel with open arms.

And so they did in a display of malevolent faux naivete that left your humble servant shaking his head.

Supported by the likes of the Hebrew University, J Street, the Anti-Defamation League, and organizations subsidized by the New Israel Fund, lawyers for Al-Qasem argued that because she applied for visa to come to Israel to study at the Hebrew University School of Law, she has had a “change of heart” and is “turning over a new page in life.”

In the oral arguments, the three judge panel of Neal Hendel, Anat Baron, and Uzi Vogelman completely bought into this nonsensical narrative, with one judge sternly lecturing a government attorney: “How is it possible that Lara Al-Qasem supports BDS and applies to be a student at the Hebrew University School of Law?”

To which your humble servant would have replied by referring to the fact that has been widely reported in the Israeli media:  the Faculty of Law at the Hebrew University is hosting a conference on “Life Under Occupation” on October 31st. Organized by Hebrew University professors Amiram Goldblum and Alon Harel, the conference has issued this announcement which amply shows why Lara Al-Qasem wants to be at Hebrew University:

“The conference will deal with the implications of the occupation for various dimensions in Israeli society, including dimensions less familiar to the Israeli public, such as: the implications of the occupation for law, Israeli academia, the Arab minority in Israel, archaeology, the perception of the space and the use of nature protection to activate the occupation, etc. The purpose of the conference is to examine the profound impact of the occupation on Israeli and Palestinian society in Israel and the territories. The first two panels will deal with Israel, the third will deal with Jerusalem, while the last two will focus on the impact on the occupied territories.”

The conference–which the High Court Justices certainly know about–only includes such leftist speakers such as Prof. Rafi Greenberg, founder of Emek Shaveh; Dr. Assaf Sharon, director of Molad; Aluf Benn, Haaretz editor-in-chief; Dror Etkes, director of Peace Now’s Settlement Watch; and Dr. Yehudit Oppenheimer, director of Ir Amim, among others.

There you have it. Lara Al-Qasem and Hebrew University are a perfect fit.

Not to be overlooked in the High Court’s decision is the fact that the Court has run roughshod over an Israeli law passed by the Knesset yet again.

The High Court looks at itself as the sole maker of law in this country.

Also not to be overlooked is the devastating impact of the decision on attempts to fight BDS abroad. Every time an attempt is made by state legislators in the United States, or university organizations, or cities and countries around the world to penalize those supporting BDS, all BDS has to do is point to the Israel High Court. For those of us who fight BDS everyday, the Court’s decision is an abomination.
