Happy Tu B’Av!

Today is the 15th of Av–also known as Tu B’Av–also known as Israel’s Valentines Day. Happy Tu B’Av!

A Funny Story Of The Morning

The fake Iranian aircraft carrier--prior to sinking.

The fake Iranian aircraft carrier–prior to sinking.

As you may know, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards spent this past year constructing a fake aircraft carrier–modeled after those of the U.S. Nimitz class. The purpose of the fake carrier was for Revolutionary Guard soldiers to practice attacking the boat via boarding parties, underwater demolition teams, and even dummy missiles.

Last week, the Iranians held a military exercised dubbed “the Great Prophet 14”. A viewing stand was set up for all of the Iranian political leaders and military generals. As part of the exercise, non-explosive missiles were shot at the fake ship.

Hilariously, the Iranians accidentally sunk their own fake ship.

The last few days have been spent trying to hoist it up from the seafloor.

The Unfortunately True Quote of the Day

Just at the outset of the massive explosion in Beirut--the red cloud apparently consists of toxic chemicals. More on the story below.

“If this were to happen in Israel, God forbid, the whole Arab world would go out to distribute sweets and candy in the streets.”

“Benjamin”, an anonymous person on an Israeli social media platform last night referring to the blast that leveled part of Beirut yesterday and the fact that Israel is offering humanitarian aid to the Lebanese.

Likud Chickens Out, As Expected

As you will recall, today is the day on which the Knesset is expected to vote on a bill by Yamina Party member Ayelet Shaked that would severely curtail the power of the Israel Supreme Court to invalidate laws made in the Knesset.

The “Shaked Law” is a no-brainer. Over the years, the powers of the Knesset have been constantly whittled away by the Court to the point that the legislative body has been neutered.

There should be no reason in the world for all of the parties on the Israeli right to not support the law, but as we suggested in a blog several days ago, they (Likud, Yisrael Beiteinu, Shas, United Torah Judaism) are all finding nonsensical reasons not to vote against it.

The biggest chickens are members of Likud who have apparently decided to not even show up for the Knesset vote so that they will not be “forced” to cast a negative vote on orders of PM Netanyahu.

The Blast In Beirut

The unbelievable scene at the port of Beirut this morning. Note the huge black crater which was the epicenter of the blast.

The unbelievable scene at the port of Beirut this morning. Note the huge black crater which was where the warehouse stood–the epicenter of the blast.

What kind of explosion is caused by 2700 tons of ammonium nitrate?

*The blast caused a 3.3 Richter scale earthquake in Beirut.

*The blast was “felt” 160 miles away in Cyprus.

What is ammonium nitrate used for? Making fertilizer and making bombs.

Who is to blame? According to the Lebanese, the ammonium nitrate was confiscated from a ship that was headed from the country of Georgia to Mozambique back in 2013 and kept in a warehouse under the control of Hezbollah. Apparently Hezbollah members were killed in the blast, and Hezbollah “police” are now patrolling the area.

Why would Hezbollah want control over the ammonium nitrate? You tell me, dear reader.

By the way, there is another report this morning that suggests that not only was ammonium nitrate in the warehouse but also Hezbollah housed “unconventional weapons” there.

It should be added that Israel has been warning Lebanon for years that Hezbollah is storing weapons in the middle of densely populated areas such as at the port and at the airport.
