There were 5 stabbings or thwarted stabbings yesterday:

Remember how your humble servant predicted a few days ago that the removal of checkpoints in eastern Jerusalem neighborhoods would renew stabbings in Jerusalem?

*At 12:38 pm, a Palestinian terrorist attempted to stab Israelis across the street from the Damascus (Shechem) Gate in Jerusalem. No Israelis were wounded. The terrorist was shot and killed.

*At 12:50 pm, two Palestinian terrorists using a knife and scissors stabbed a 25-year-old Israeli security guard in the chest and head on the Jerusalem Light Rail train near Pisgat Ze’ev in Jerusalem. The Israeli was released from the hospital last night. One terrorist was shot and wounded, the other was captured.

Remember how your humble servant predicted a few days ago that the removal of checkpoints in Judea and Samaria would bring more terror there?

*At 3:10 pm, a Palestinian terrorist at the Hakiosk checkpoint northeast of Abu Dis at Tekoa charged toward Border Guards with knife yelling “Allahu Akbar.” No Israelis were wounded. The terrorist was shot and killed.

*At 4:03 pm, Palestinian terrorists attempted to stab Israeli security personnel during riots in the Palestinian settlement of Ras a-Tira. No Israelis were wounded. The terrorists were captured.

Remember how your humble servant predicted a few days ago that the opening of crossings from Judea and Samaria into Israel would bring terrorism into the heart of Israel?

*At 10:01 pm, a terrorist brandishing with a knife was spotted by alert citizens on Jabotinsky Street in Petach Tikva. He was chased through the streets until finally captured. No Israelis were wounded.

There were also numerous “rock” attacks that wounded Israelis: IDF soldiers at south Mt. Hebron, Hebron, and Awa; motorists at Talmonim, Peduel, Silwan, Ras al-Amud, Nabala, and Emmanuel; and pedestrians in Kiryat Arba, Psagot (a security guard remains hospitalized this morning), and at Government House in Jerusalem.

An Israeli bus on Road 443 was firebombed by Palestinian terrorists and set afire. MADA treated passengers for shock.

And all of the above does not include large riots that occurred in Amatin, Hebron, Deir Nizam, and at the entrance to Ramallah.

***One would think that in the face of all of the above Palestinian terror which is hitting us all day everyday from all sides that our so-called “Defense” Minister Ya’alon would be focused on stopping it . . .

But you would be wrong.

Ya’alon engaged in yet another incredible dialogue with reporters yesterday in which his entire focus once again was “Jewish terrorism against Palestinians.”

Except that he couldn’t come with any.

He began by saying that since he and Netanyahu began the process of “administratively detaining” (aka “holding people in prison with no charges and no indictments”) there has been “no more Jewish terrorism against Palestinians.”

Then he immediately started his daily spiel again about the fire at Duma:

“Once we realized what group was responsible for the attack, we decided to take draconian measures against members of this organization. We hope to soon have a trial and to completely solve this attack, but the fact is that those that we have in detention cannot reproduce this attack.”

“Reproducing an attack” refers to a confession made by those accused of a crime who then go to the place where the crime occurred and reenact how they carried out the crime.

Here’s your humble servant’s translation of Ya’alon’s Duma comments:

“Once we suspected what group was responsible for the attack, we decided to throw its members in prison with no charges. We cannot have a trial yet because we have no evidence, and those we have rounded up still claim their innocence.

It’s just unbelievable.

***Israel’s famed uber-left wing newspaper “Haaretz” released some interesting figures yesterday.

As its print version continues to decline, its digital version is barely keeping the paper from declaring bankruptcy. According to the editor, the paper’s financial difficulties are directly tied to the mass exodus of “English” digital subscribers during and after last year’s war with Hamas–in which the paper ran continuous articles undermining Israel and supportive of Hamas.

Specifically, there are 23,544 digital subscribers to the English version of the newspaper which is 10% lower than the target the newspaper hoped to reach by the end of this year.

***Israeli household income continues to rise . . .

Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics has released statistics that show that the average gross income per month per household (from salaries, allowances, and subsidies) is 18,329 shekels ($4689) per month–with a net income of 15,149 shekels ($3876) per month.

This may not seem like much to people in developed countries; however, the average “expense consumption” (average monthly expenses including food) is 12,023 shekels ($3076).

All of this means that on average, the average household has 3126 shekels ($800) of money left each month for discretionary spending.

Which city’s citizens have the highest amount of money left over at the end of the month? Those living in Rishon LeZion.  Which have the least? Those living in Jerusalem.

By the way, which city has the highest number of workers per household? Your humble servant’s city of Ashdod with 1.7. And which city has the highest property tax in the country? Again, Ashdod.

TODAY’S BLOG:

Appallingly, it has come to light in recent days (via Walla, Arutz Sheva, and Haaretz) that the Israeli government of PM Netanyahu is secretly pushing hard to create a new Palestinian city in northern Samaria.

This city will be a sister city to almost-completed new Palestinian city of Rawabi which is located between Shechem (Nablus) and Ramallah. Apparently, PM Netanyahu just presented the city as a “unilateral gesture” for peace in his discussions with Obama a few days ago.

So what is appalling about this new plan?

Aside from the fact that once again, for the millionth time, Israel is offering a gigantic peace gesture in return for nothing, the rationale behind the gesture is fatally flawed.

The idea is that the Israel security establishment believes that establishing the city will create thousands of new jobs for Palestinians and improve their economy–and that this will stop the terror now rampaging throughout Judea, Samaria, and elsewhere.

In the first place, even a casual glance at the recent terrorism shows that it is not “poor” Palestinians who are carrying out the acts of terror. More often than not, the terrorists are coming from the most affluent Palestinian families and either already have excellent jobs (such as working for the PLO police or Bezeq) or are studying at universities in such fields as law and medicine.

In the second place, the entire liberal theory equating poverty with crime has been roundly discredited in recent studies–particularly as it relates to children who were born into families that were poor that had improved economically. A well-known Swedish study (from the Swedish Karolinska Institute, published in the British Journal of Psychiatry) found that “family income” was not the determining factor in whether a person would become a criminal or not.

To quote an analysis of the study’s conclusions: “[The study] suggests  . . . that a family’s culture, once established, is “sticky”—that you can, to put it crudely, take the kid out of the neighbourhood, but not the neighbourhood out of the kid.”

At the risk of stating the obvious, Palestinian culture is sticky, sticky with the glorification of victimhood and death.

No amount of cities built or jobs provided will ever change that.

Addendum: PM Netanyahu also announced yesterday in Washington that Israel will make take more unilateral steps for peace as the security situation permits. Why in the world should we Israelis reward the Palestinians for quietening a situation that they created?
