UPDATES 6:00 pm Israel time:

…Palestinian terrorism so far today…

*4:03 pm: Palestinian terrorists in Gaza opened fire on an IDF engineers on the border near Nahal Oz. No soldiers were wounded; however, an IDF bulldozer was badly damaged.

*2:30 pm: Palestinian terrorists assaulted an Israeli bus near Beit Ummar in Gush Etzion. No Israelis were physically wounded, but many were treated for trauma.

*10:07 am: Four tons of ammonium chloride to have been used in the production of hundreds of missiles were reported to have been intercepted at the Nizzana Crossing. They were being smuggled into Gaza by a “Hamas activist.”

7:04 am: A Jewish motorist was wounded on the road to Hawara by Palestinian terrorists.

…Palestinian terrorism yesterday…

At least 1 stabbing took place. In the stabbing acknowledged by the police as a “terror attack”, a 60 year old Israeli was badly wounded at the Lion’s Gate in Jerusalem by an 18 year old terrorist from Samaria who was later captured. The stabbing of an 80 year old man in Tel Aviv remains “unclassified”.

There were more than 20 “rock” attacks in such places as Shuafat, Hevron, Silwan, the Maccabim checkpoint, Wadi Joz, Makel, Malik, A-Ram, El Gib, and Beit Ur al-Tahta.

…Netanyahu’s surprise visit…

PM Netanyahu was at the Gaza border today at which time he blathered this nonsense:

“We have now finished nearly two years since the war with Hamas in 2014, and these have been two of the quietest years we can remember since Hamas took over in 2007.”

Hmm. Let’s see:

–there was a shooting this morning not far from the spot where Netanyahu was speaking;

–terrorists continue to try to infiltrate into Israel everyday;

–missiles continue falling at the rate of 1 or 2 per week;

–smuggling continues apace with missile components regularly intercepted at sea and at crossings;

–and . . . um  . . . what about that gigantic Hamas tunnel that was discovered recently that ran from Gaza to a point right under a kibbutz?

Yes, Benjamin, things are very quiet indeed.

…Hi ho, Hi ho, it’s off to Jerusalem I go…

After a Passover holiday where hardly any Jews were allowed to go up to the Temple Mount, now all Jews will be prohibited from going to the Temple Mount or to the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hevron on Wednesday and Thursday.

Why have the Israeli police decreed that the Mount and Cave must be judenrein (free of Jews)?

Because the Muslims are celebrating a holiday called “the Prophet’s Ascension”.

This holiday celebrates Mohammed’s imaginary ride from Mecca to Jerusalem on his winged horseand subsequent spiritual ascent to heaven in a dream where he supposedly met Moses, Jesus, and others.

And because of this imaginary adventure Jews cannot go to our holiest places?

TODAY’S BLOG:

It was on May 5th of last year that Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he had formed a coalition government.

It is worthwhile to take a look back at what was written about the new coalition–and your humble servant has chosen to reprint today a few paragraphs (which are representative of all media reportage at the time) from a New York Times article written about the event May 6,2015.

The article began:

“JERUSALEM — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel barely met the legal deadline to form a new government on Wednesday night and will start his fourth term with the slimmest of parliamentary majorities, made up of right-leaning and religious parties.”

And continued:

“He was forced to make major concessions to the more conservative Jewish Home party, and emerged weakened to lead a government that Israeli experts said was unlikely to last long or do much.”

Some of those experts then chimed in:

“‘Netanyahu simply miscalculated,’ said Eytan Gilboa, a professor at Bar-Ilan University who specializes in politics and communications. ‘What you see here is a big political mess that, I think, shows Netanyahu has been too confident. ‘Of the new coalition, he added, ‘Nobody in his right mind believes that this will hold for even a short time.’”

And still more:

“. . . The 61-member coalition is the thinnest majority in Israel in two decades, according to parliamentary records. Yohanan Plesner, president of the Israel Democracy Institute and a centrist former member of Parliament, called it a recipe for stagnation and dysfunction. ‘Any major changes, economic or foreign policy, are not going to take place — it’s a government that will be based on an ongoing balancing act and pleasing the members without aggravating the other members too much,’ Mr. Plesner said. ‘Either it will expand or it will collapse.’

Well guess what?

Even though major changes may be afoot as we reported in yesterday’s blog, the coalition still survives and far from stagnating has introduced and passed major legislation with even more forthcoming.

It leads your humble servant to add a bit to a famous saying from Mark Twain. To wit, there are four kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, statistics, and “expert” statements–though, of course, “expert statements” could easily be classified as “damned lies.”
