Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Memorial Day

All of Israel stood silently at attention at 10 am this morning as memorial sirens sounded throughout the country. Motorists stopped on the highway and got out of their cars, people at work stood at their desks, schoolchildren stood motionless on playgrounds.

Yom Hashoah is always a bitter holiday with ceremonies held all over the country and nonstop television programs documenting the brutal murder of our people in the Holocaust. And yet, the bitterness is always tinged with resilience and strength as the survivors tell their stories of incredible survival in the face of such horror.

Some statistics from Israel:

194,458 Holocaust survivors live in Israel

1,083 die every month (a number that is obviously increasing as survivors age)

34% of the survivors believe that there will be another Holocaust

Many survivors live alone, and some 45,000 live below the poverty line despite receiving government aid (which is obviously insufficient).

Your humble servant encourages each of you dear readers to stand in silence for one minute right now to remember those who perished in the Shoah.

UPDATES 6:00 pm Israel time:

…Palestinian terrorism so far today…

The battle continues along the Gaza Border where IDF engineers have discovered yet another Hamas tunnel leading into Israel.

At 5:05 pm, less than an hour ago, mortars fired from Gaza struck near Nahal Oz. Three hours ago, just after 3:00 pm, more mortars were fired at IDF soldiers in the area. This brings to 14 the number of mortars fired at the IDF Nahal Oz base in the last two days–as Hamas attempts to stop IDF forces from uncovering more tunnels.

A Border Guard was wounded this morning in eastern Jerusalem by “rocks” thrown by terrorists.

“Rock” attacks have occurred at Hawara (a bus), Silwan, Issawiya, Biddu, and elsewhere.

…Palestinian terrorism yesterday…

There were more than 40 Palestinian attacks.

A stabbing was thwarted late last night (9:58 pm) when a knife-armed female terrorist was captured in the Old City of Jerusalem.

Mortars were fired at IDF troops along the Gaza border at 7:00 pm, 4:26 pm. 3:46 pm, 2:11 pm, and 9:40 am.

An IED was thrown at IDF soldiers at Yabad.

Molotovs were thrown at Neve Tsuf, Basooya, and Psagot.

“Rock” attacks occurred at the Tapuach Junction, Hiza, Beit Ummar, Abnil, Karni Shomron, Ma’ale Amos, Makel, Shuafat, Ras al-Amud, Anun, Sair, Turmus’ayya, Kfar Etzion, Catania, Qalqilya, Zeit, Binzit Zaid, Yatma, Qalandiya, Neria, and elsewhere.

TODAY’S BLOG:

In a shockingly nauseating Holocaust ceremony speech given last night at the Masua Holocaust Institute in Tel Yitzhak, IDF Deputy Chief of Staff Yair Golan outrageously compared what is happening in Israel today with what took place in Nazi Germany in the years leading up to and during the Holocaust.

Here is what Golan said, in his own words:

If there is something that frightens me about the memory of the Holocaust, it is seeing the abhorrent processes that took place in Europe, and Germany in particular, some 70, 80 or 90 years ago, and finding manifestations of these processes here among us in 2016.

Golan continued:

“Nothing is easier than hating the stranger, to arouse anxiety and intimidate. There is no easier brutalization, jaded and self-righteousness. On the Holocaust should be considered in our ability to uproot from our midst signs of impatience, signs of violence, the beginnings of self-destruction and through the moral decline.”

Hating the stranger? Israel has gone to extraordinarily lengths to embrace “the stranger”–both the “strangers” who have made aliya to this country, and strangers around the world to whom Israel always sends aid in times of need.

Arouse anxiety? What an absurd allegation for Golan to make against his fellow Israelis who are constantly traumatized by terror attacks.

Intimidate? Who is trying to intimidate anyone? Israel is surrounded by enemies on every border.

And what was Golan’s example of the supposed “signs of violence, the beginnings of self-destruction, and moral decline”?

The Hevron soldier.

“Misuses of weapons and violations of the purity of arms have been taking place in the IDF since its institution. The IDF has taken pride . . . to courageously investigate problematic conduct, and to assign full responsibility for the good as well as for the bad.”

The IDF has the courage to investigate? One wishes that Golan’s IDF General Command had the courage to fight. And had the courage not to throw its own soldiers under the bus.

All of which leads one to ask–what in the world made Golan think that he could utter such remarks? The answer is simple. Golan felt free to make such outrageous comments because he was merely parroting was “Defense” Minister Ya’alon and his immediate superior Chief of Staff Eizenkot have already said about the Hevron soldier, about moral decline, etc. etc.

Needless to say, Golan’s remarks have ignited a firestorm of protest both because of the absolute fraud of his statements and because he cheapened the Holocaust ceremony by turning it into a political statement. Naftali Bennett, who was in attendance, immediately took to the social media to demand that Golan apologize.

Following what was described as a “hot” meeting last night between PM Netanyahu and “Defense” Minister Ya’alon, Golan issued a lame “clarification” this afternoon in which he refused to apologize, instead dissembling:  “I did not mean to compare the IDF and the State of Israel’s Nazi-era processes. The comparison is absurd and baseless, and there was no intention to make such a comparison or criticism of the political leadership.”

What a joke. Golan said what he said, and there is no way for him to squirm out of the debacle he has created.

What debacle you may ask?

As of this this hour, Golan’s abhorrent accusations have appeared in more than 200 international publications. The headlines read: “IDF General compares Israel to Nazi Germany” and “Israelis are Nazis Says IDF General.”

In short, Yair Golan has given Israel-haters an abominable canard with which they can bash our country for the next decade.
