The amazing ability of the Palestinians to disseminate nonsensical information was on display again yesterday. To celebrate the so-called Palestinian “Nakba”, the “catastrophe” during which the state of Israel was established, the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics issued a press release containing its latest population “data”.
Except that the data is not data at all, but poorly written and contradictory estimates–estimates presumably dreamed up by PLO propagandists at the Bureau.
Take for example the opening sentence:
“The Palestinian population was 1.37 million in 1948 but by the end of 2011, the estimated world population of Palestinians totaled 11.2 million.”
Yet seven sentences later we have this:
The number of Palestinians who remained in their homeland in the 1948 territory after the Nakba was estimated at 154 thousand persons, now estimated as 1.37 million on the 64rd anniversary of the Nakba.

So which is it supposed to be: were there 1.37 million Palestinians in 1948? or did the 154,000 Palestinians who did not leave in 1948 increase to 1.37 million in 2012?
The Bureau also dissembles that according to its estimates (there is no actual census in Judea, Samaria and Gaza), the end of 2011 saw 2.6 million Palestinians living in Judea and Samaria, and 1.6 million living in Gaza–for a total of 4.2 million Palestinians. But wait, the Bureau tells us there are more Palestinians–the Arabs who live in Israel whom the Bureau estimates to now number 1.4 million.
These estimates bring the total number of Palestinians estimated to now be living in the area between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean to 5.6 million–a number that the Bureau estimates will increase to 7.2 million in the next 7 years. Where did this estimate come from? Who knows.
Of course, no Nakba “data” release would be complete without a litany of “refugee” information. And the newest “data” “shows” that 44.1 percent of the total Palestinian population within the Palestinian “Territory” are “refugees”. Are you following this, dear reader? The Palestinians would have us believe that 44.1%, almost half, of all the Palestinians in Judea, Samaria, and Gaza are actually “refugees”–Palestinian “refugees” living under the direct administration of Palestinians.
And, 0f course, the number of “refugees” is increasing by the second.
It is not that more and more Palestinians are being “uprooted and displaced” from their homes, it is simply that the Palestinians who are presumably descendants of the original “refugees” in 1948 (most of whom are now dead) are reproducing in ever greater numbers. Every great great great grandchild that is born is automatically lumped into the category of “refugee”. In this way, the Palestinians can always be sure that there are plenty of “refugees”.
So, back to your humble servant’s original point–who is propagating this absurd nonsense this morning? A cursory check of google, reveals that the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics “news story” has now been picked up by UPI, WAFA, BDS, Al-Arabiya, France 24, UNRWA, and Al-Jazeera. By tomorrow, we will hear these numbers proclaimed from every media outlet in Europe and the Americas.
