Yesterday in this blog,  your humble servant began a 3-part series on Judea and Samaria in the form of a multiple choice quiz. This quiz was inspired by a comment of  Dani Dayan, head of the Council of Jewish Communities of Judea and Samaria, who said that it was about time for the E.U. to recognize these communities:

“The time has come for the European Union to recognize the flourishing communities in Judea and Samaria, that include four cities, six regional councils and 13 local councils and more than 120 communities for a population of 360,000 Israelis. They are a fait accompli and are irreversible.”

The first two questions yesterday had to do with the size of the area of Judea and Samaria and with the Israeli/Palestinian creation of Areas A, B, and C in the Oslo Accords. You will recall that yesterday, I left you with the question:

3. Of all the Palestinians in Judea and Samaria, what % of them live in Areas A and B?

A. 43 %

B. 67%

C. 98%

The answer to question number 3 is C. 98%.  Here is the actual breakdown of Areas A, B, and C:

Area A contains 2.7%* of the total land of Judea and Samara; it is home to 56% of the total number of Palestinians in Judea and Samaria. This area’s administration and security is completely controlled by the Palestinians.

Area B contains 25.1% of the total land of Judea and Samaria; it is home to 42% of the total number of Palestinians in Judea and Samaria. This area’s administration is controlled by the Palestinians, and its security is controlled by Israelis.

Area C contains 72.1% of the total land of Judea and Samaria; it is home to 2% of the total number of Palestinians in Judea and Samaria. Israel controls the administration and security of this area.

Question 4:  All (except one in the middle of Hevron) of the Jewish communities of Judea and Samaria are in Area C which constitutes 72.1% of the land. However, what % of the total land of Judea and Samaria do virtually all of the 360,000 Jewish community members live on?

A. 2%

B. 22%

C. 61%

The answer is 2%.  And, looking at the map,  most of the major communities are located in the tiny strip of Area C located between parts of Area B and the western edge of Judea and Samaria (the edge closest to the Mediterranean Sea).

Question 5. Of the top 10 most populated cities in Judea and Samaria, how many are Jewish?

The answer is “Three”. Modi’in Illit has a population of 50,000; Maale Adumim has a population of 39,000; and Beitar Illit has 38,000 residents. All of these cities have a greater population than Ramallah (28,000), Bethlehem (26,000), and Jericho (19,000). By the way, the two largest cities in Judea and Samaria, by far, are Hevron (165,000) and Shechem/Nablus (128,000).

Question 6.  In terms of religion, what is the % of Muslim, Jews, and Christians in Judea and Samaria?

A. Muslim 89%, Christian 6%, and Jewish 5%

B. Muslim 96%, Jewish 3%, Christian 1%

C. Muslim 74%, Jewish 19%, Christian 7%

The answer is C. Remarkably, this is almost exactly the reverse of the situation in Israel–in which roughly 25 % of the population is non-Jewish.

Question 7: Judea and Samaria has 5, 147 km/3,198 mi of roads. What percentage of these roads are paved?

A. 27%

B. 64%

C. 100%

The answer is that all of the roads are paved–100%.  Because of the ongoing attacks on Israeli motorists (see the israelstreet update today) on the older roads of Judea and Samaria, some new roads have been built that are not accessible to cars with Palestinian license plates.
