UPDATE 9 am Israel time Tuesday:
At approximately 10:30 pm last night, there was a shooting incident between Palestinian terrorists and IDF personnel near the entrance to Kiryat Arba. Less than two hours later, in the middle of the night, Israeli “security personnel” were worried less about security than about razing two buildings in the fledgling Jewish community of Oz Zion.
Interestingly, if the recommendations of the Levy Report (described in yesterday’s blog–click here to read) are enacted, such demolitions will not be allowed to take place.
Unrelated to the above incident in Kiryat Arba, the IDF captured 8 wanted Palestinian terrorists overnight in Judea and Samaria.
This morning a Jerusalem District Court has just found former PM Ehud Olmert guilty on one count of “breach of trust” and innocent on two counts, one related to the Talansky bribery affair and the other related to the Rishon Travel Agency double billing scandal.
FOLLOW-UP TO YESTERDAY’S BLOG:
The Levy report–which gives a legal basis for retroactively authorizing “unauthorized” Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria has raised a storm of protest from the Israeli “left” in the last 24 hours.
Ludicrously, the Israel Attorney General’s office has let it be known that Attorney General Weinstein will reject the report because “it would cause problems for Israel” at the International Court of Justice (which has previously ruled that the “settlements” are illegal), in the international arena at such places as the United Nations (which condemns Israel with every resolution), and in diplomatic circles (this morning the U.S. State Department has already issued a statement condemning the report in advance of the coming visit of Hillary Clinton).
The real reason that Attorney General Weinstein is upset is because he felt from the beginning that Netanyahu’s setting up of the Levy Committee was an attempt to subvert his authority–which it was (in your humble servant’s opinion, his power should be diminished). PM Netanyahu has pledged this morning to bring the Levy report to the Cabinet next week.
TODAY’S BLOG:
The events in Judea and Samaria described above notwithstanding, it all started in southern Israel at 3:23 in the afternoon yesterday. The men, women, and children of the southern Israeli communities around Gaza were sent running to their bomb shelters by the screeching sound of sirens warning of incoming rockets from Palestinian terrorists in Gaza. Shortly thereafter, at least one explosion was heard in an open area of the Eshkol region.
Then, between 4:40 pm and 5:40 pm, there were clashes between IDF soldiers and Hamas terrorists near Kissufim. It was later reported that terrorists had fired anti-tank missiles at the soldiers.
This was followed at 7:28 pm by more incoming rocket sirens–and another run to bomb shelters all over the region. Shortly thereafter, two more terrorist missiles struck in the Chof Ashkelon region , and another missile struck the Chof Ashkelon region after 9 pm–causing a number of people to be taken to the hospital with traumatic stress reactions.
Just after midnight, more rocket sirens were heard in Ofakim.
Not surprisingly, there is little to no mention of any of this activity in the Israeli media this morning and surely none in the international media that you, dear readers, read and see in your location.
What the Israeli media is focused on this morning is what happened at around 8:00 pm near the Yad Mordechai Junction (Yad “Mordehai” is seen on the Google Map below–the dotted line indicates the border with Gaza):

A restaurant at a small shopping mall was sprayed with sniper gunfire from Gaza (over a mile and a half away), and two families with young children who were eating in the restaurant had their cars sprayed with gunfire as well.
On one of the cars, the bullets penetrated the roof and hit the dashboard directly where the driver would have been sitting. In the other car, the bullets shot out the back window glass of the car hitting a child seat where a child would have been sitting.
Following this incident the IAF reported that it hit two “Hamas terror centers” in Gaza, but the truth this morning is that the IAF hit two empty buildings. The IDF spokesman’s office was quick to say, however, that no attacks on Israeli citizens would be tolerated.
Given the events of yesterday–and the events of everyday–“no attacks on Israeli citizens will be tolerated” is nothing but a sad joke.
