UPDATE 7 pm Israel time Thursday:
A follow-up to yesterday’s blog about the decline of Benjamin Netanyahu: a new poll out this morning shows that if an election were held today, Yair Lapid’s “There will be a future” party would win 30 seats, Netanyahu’s Likud Beiteinu 22, Naftali Bennett’s Jewish Home 15, and Yachimovich’s Labor 13. By the way, Tzipi Livni, the big winner so far in the coalition negotiations would pick up only 4 seats.
In this context, is it any wonder that Lapid is holding out against joining the Netanyahu coalition–demanding a change to the draft law that ensures military or national service for all 18 year olds? The real question mark at the moment is Bennett–if he doesn’t join Netanyahu, there will almost certainly be new elections within a very short period of time.Nevertheless, there are reports late this afternoon that Bennett is on the verge of joining.
TODAY’S BLOG:
The debate [click here to see a clip] began Wednesday evening at Christ’s Church College at Oxford.
The topic: “Israel should withdraw immediately from the West Bank.”
The debaters:
Eylon Aslan-Levy: a Politics, Philosophy, and Economics junior student at Oxford
George Galloway: British MP for Bradford West, long-time Palestinian supporter of Hezbollah and Hamas, participant in various “flotillas”, and strident activist for the Boycott, Divest, and Sanctions movement against Israel.
The first speaker Eylon Aslan-Levy (2 minutes into his presentation): “We wanted peace we got war. We mustn’t make the same mistake again. So my first point, only a peace treaty can provide a framework for enduring peace with security.”
[Galloway interrupts.]
Eylon Aslan-Levy: “I’m sorry [I didn’t understand] Mr Galloway?”
George Galloway: “You said “we“, are you an Israeli?
Eylon Aslan-Levy: “I am yes.”
[Galloway gets up and begins to leave the room.]
Galloway: “I don’t debate with Israelis. I’ve been misled . . .sorry [to the packed room] . . . I don’t recognize Israel, and I don’t debate with Israelis.”
This exchange, so short and yet so revealing, goes to the heart of the BDS, Hamas, Hezbollah, Iranian, Arab, and Palestinian problem with Israel. Simply put, Israel has no right to exist, and Israelis should not even be spoken to.
It is a fervent belief that your humble servant has seen expressed repeatedly in venues throughout the world. Underneath the false veneer of “seeking peace”, what the anti-Israel forces seek is the defeat and demolition of Israel.
Later in the evening yesterday, Galloway expanded on his “boycott” of the Israeli debater: “I refused this evening to debate with an Israeli, a supporter of the apartheid State of Israel. The reason is simple: no recognition, no normalization. Just boycott, divestment and sanctions until the apartheid state is defeated.”
This is the ugly face of the anti-Israel “peace” movement.
