–>New warnings about the water situation in northern Israel.
Several days ago, we blogged about how Israel can count itself lucky that it has become a world leader in desalination and reclaimed water. In effect, the country does not have a water problem.
Well, not exactly. The same drought that has enveloped Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan has enveloped northern Israel. The Kineret (Sea of Galilee) which was about 50 cm over the so-called “red line” for minimum water at this time last year is now more than 3.5 meters below that line.
And the situation will get worse.
As we have reported, the recent absurd water agreement with Jordan calls for more water to be pumped out of the Kineret and sold to Jordan for pennies on the dollar.
The new talk is that desalinated water from the desalination plants in southern Israel will now have to be piped north to the Galilee and Golan regions to make up for the water shortfall. This will not only be expensive in terms of building the infrastructure to carry the water, but farmers and ranchers in the Galilee and Golan will shortly find themselves paying much more for water (as we in southern Israel do for desalinated water).
–>Next week will mark one year since the last election.
And guess what? The Netanyahu coalition appears to be holding firm despite all predictions (from the left) to the contrary.
And what is the leftist Israeli media doing everyday now? Promoting the idea of a new election with countless interviews with members of every party that is not in the Coalition.
TODAY’S BLOG:
It is easy to be lulled into thinking that with the abominable war in Syria, the constant anti-Israel haranguing coming from Hezbollah in Lebanon, and the daily threats from Hamas in Gaza, at least Israel is in somewhat a position of stability because of having Jordan on one side and Egypt on the other.
After all, both of those countries signed peace agreements with Israel decades ago, and there have been exchanges of ambassadors and other representatives over the years.
But this thinking completely ignores the reality on the ground where Jordanian and Egyptian popular sentiment has never warmed to Israel and viciously vilifies Israel at every turn.
Two events in the past week underscore this.
First, on Thursday, Egyptian legislator Tawfik Okasha was thrown out of the Egyptian Parliament for five years because he met with Israel’s Ambassador to Egypt Haim Koren last Sunday. Pelted with shoes, Okasha was cursed as “the normalization legislator” by his fellow legislators who voted 467-128 to oust him.
Second, on Monday, one of Jordan’s leading newspapers, Al-Ghad, ran an advertisement which sought Jordanian workers to work in Eilat. The seemingly innocuous advertisement merely was following up recent talks between Israel and Jordan in which Israel agreed to bring in hotel and construction workers. This ad mentioned that 45 Jordanian construction workers are needed.
One would have thought that the sky had fallen in Jordan. Upon seeing the ad, other newspapers and press outlets excoriated Al-Ghad for having “no honor” and for promoting “normalization.”
By yesterday, Al-Ghad had profusely apologized declaring that “the advertisement was not published intentionally” and that “everyone knows that Al-Ghad opposes normalization with Israel.” However, even that was not enough for Israel haters who said that the apology did not appear on the front page.
The sad truth is that Israel is located in a sea of anti-Semitic hatred and two prominent islands in that sea are Jordan and Egypt.
