. . . BREAKING NEWS . . .

UPDATES 7 am Israel time:

–>Palestinian terrorists don’t take a holiday.

*Last night, a Palestinian terrorist armed with a hand-made machine gun and a knife was captured just west of Ma’aleh Shomrom in Samaria.

*Early in the evening, a Palestinian terrorist assauted an IDF force with “rocks”; when captured, she pulled out a knife.

*Earlier in the day, an IDF soldier was wounded by “rocks” near the Benjamin community.

All day long, there were more than 20 “rock” and Molotov attacks at such places as Jalazun, the Jerusalem Light Rail, Makel, the Shuafat checkpoint, Rachel’s Tomb near Bethlehem, Husan, the Jerusalem neighborhoods of Issawiya and Silwan, and Mt. Hebron.

–>Palestinian cyber terrorism penetrates the IDF.

In an outrageous revelation yesterday, the IDF revealed that in late February, Israel managed to capture a 23-year-old computer engineer and talent coordinator from Gaza (the IDF captured him when he was on his way to an Arab Idol singing contest outside of Gaza).

It turns out that between 2011-2014, using very rudimentary equipment that he purchased online and redesigned himself, Majd Ouida was able to hack Israel’s drone surveillance system over Gaza and feed the information it was sending to the IDF to Islamic Jihad. In other words, during the 2011 war Gaza War, Islamic Jihad could monitor IDF troop and materiel movements putting our soldiers at deadly risk.

Unbelievable.

Not only that, but Ouida also hacked into the computers at Ben Gurion airport and extracted such things as passenger lists for airplanes and other flight information. He also hacked into computers belonging to various Israel governmental ministries–and even computers belonging to the PLO in Ramallah.

The absurdity is that Israel, which is supposed to be on the cutting edge of cyber warfare, had these systems hacked by a young student singer wannabe. Can you even begin to imagine what serious hackers such as the Iranians and Chinese must be looking at right now?

Scary. Very scary.

–>The Netanyahu news conference fashla (a Yiddish word meaning “fiasco”) last night.

What a bizarre event. It was announced late in the afternoon out of the blue, that for the first time in over a year, PM Netanyahu would hold a press conference.

It was scheduled to begin at 6:30 pm, but it didn’t.

At 6:30 pm, it was announced that it would begin at 8:00 pm, but it didn’t.

After the three Israeli news channels (1, 2, 10) had already begun their regular 8:00 pm newscasts, Netanyahu suddenly appeared at the podium at about 8:10 pm. In some extraordinarily poor stagecraft, the lighting at the podium bleached out most of the colors and gave Netanyahu’s face a yellowish-orange tint.

Anyway, he began the news conference by talking about terrorism. Channels 1 and 10 carried his remarks, Channel 2 avoided the press conference altogether. When Netanyahu, looking uncharacteristically uncomfortable, fielded his second question, he got about half way through his answer when Channels 2 and 10 cut away and returned to their regular broadcasting.

It was an amazing display of the utter disregard that the leftist Israeli media has for PM Netanyahu.

All of Israel was left to read the details of the other questions/answers in this morning’s print and online media.

TODAY’S BLOG:

As you may or may not be aware, anti-Semitism has become rife at the University of California with four of its ten campuses being infamously listed among “the 10 worst schools for anti-Semitism in the U.S.”

One of those 10 is the University of California-Davis where your humble servant served on the faculty for thirty years. It is not an overstatement to say that at Davis, as at other UC’s, Jewish students find themselves the subject of overt and implied threats–and the subject of constant harassment and intimidation.

For example, two weeks ago while I was in Davis, I had the pleasure of meeting personally with George Deek, a young, articulate Israeli-Arab diplomat who had been brought to the campus by the group “Aggies for Israel.” Afterwards, Deek was scheduled to speak on campus in a university lecture hall.

What followed is what happens every time an Israeli speaker tries to speak on campus these days.

As Deek went to the podium, a large contingent of Muslim students (led by Students for Justice in Palestine) and cohorts got up out of their seats, lined the aisles of the auditorium, and lined up across the stage between Deek and the audience.

For the next 5-10 minutes, they yelled and chanted anti-Israel slogans (click here). All of this was done in full view of campus authorities who were at the presentation as well as campus police. Neither the authorities nor the police lifted a finger to stop what was going on.

The Jewish students in the room sat glued to their seats, intimidated into submission by the Muslim-led protest; all they could do was take out their cellphones and take pictures. Their free speech was effectively taken away from them by the “protesters.”

After about 10 minutes, the Muslims walked out, leaving the stage to Deek, and the program proceeded. Post-program communication with campus authorities revealed just how cowed they are. The university provost actually wrote a letter in which he praised Aggies for Israel for their non-response to the Muslim demonstration, and termed the event a “success” because no violence had erupted.

Your humble servant mentions all of this to give you some context concerning a vote that took place yesterday at the University of California Regents annual meeting. That vote was taken by an ad-hoc subcommittee on a draft proposal which read “Anti-Semitism, anti-Zionism and other forms of discrimination have no place at the University of California.”

The proposal encompassed the reality that anti-Zionism on UC campuses is directly used to intimidate Jewish students just as it was at the George Deek lecture mentioned above.  It also encompasses the reality that anti-Zionism has become code for anti-Jews.*

In the end yesterday, the Regents’ sub-committee equivocated. On the negative side, it rejected the broad, proposed statement. On the somewhat positive side it linked anti-Semitism with anti-Zionism. The statement which was approved yesterday reads:

“Anti-Semitism, anti-Semitic forms of anti-Zionism and other forms of discrimination have no place at the University of California.”

In your humble servant’s opinion, this statement confuses what anti-Zionism means. It does not mean “disagreement with the policies of the state of Israel.” Anti-Zionism means disagreement with the idea that there should be a national homeland for Jews–and that homeland is Israel.

To put it a different way, according to the Regents, it is possible to declare that the Jewish state of Israel should not exist without being anti-Semitic.

Your humble servant cannot disagree more.

A reasonable person might ask, what in the world does anti-Semitic forms of anti-Zionism” mean?

Your humble servant can easily answer that question according to the Regents’ mindset.

Unless Students for Justice in Palestine and their ilk state that “the Jewish state of Israel must be eliminated” or “Jewish IDF soldiers are baby-killers” or anything that couples “Jew or Jewish” with Israel, they are free to continue their hate speech on campus.

With administrators across the university system who act like those at UC-Davis, this simply means that nothing has changed. Jewish students will continue to be intimidated; Israeli speakers will continue to be shouted down; and anti-Semitism will become further ingrained in university life.

*Addendum. “Anti-Zionism” has always meant “anti-Jew” among Palestinians and Arabs. Ask any Palestinian what he thinks about “Israelis”, and he will tell you what he thinks about “Jews.” Ask any Palestinian terrorist what his goal is and he will tell you that “I want to kill Jews.”
