Breaking News: Tragedy In The South

A bus carrying 25 orthodox students who were in a pre-army preparatory course was swept away in the swollen Tzafit Stream near the southern part of the Dead Sea this afternoon.

Intense search and rescue operations are underway led by the IAF’s elite 669 Search and Rescue unit; however, at least 9 students  (7 girls and 2 boys) are reported “critically injured”, and 1 more is missing. The critically injured have been rushed to Soroka Hospital in Beersheva.

Unconfirmed reports from the hospital suggest that the 9 critically injured are actually dead–but again, this is unconfirmed. Let’s pray that the report is not true.

Research efforts are being hampered by the continuing heavy rains. At the current time, numerous roads are blocked such as Route 90 from Ein Gedi to Ein Bokek, Route 13, and Highway 40 from Mitzpeh Ramon to Tzihor junction. The Eilat airport is closed to takeoffs and landings because of runway erosion.

Israelstreet will provide further details as they become available.

The Other News on the Israeli Street

Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .

**Palestinian terrorists struck in more than 35 locations yesterday. Some of the worst attacks took place in Hizma (bus attack), El Aruv (“rock” attack), Halhul (Molotov attack on an IDF pillbox), Kiryat Arba (Israeli wounded in the head by a “rock”), and Azzun (Molotov attack on civilian car).

Other assaults occurred at Ofarim, along Road 446, Funduq, Kedumim, Ofra, Givat Assaf, Wadi Hermia, Hevron, Gilad’s Road, Abu Dis, the Alon Road, Tekoa, Itamar, Rehelim, and the south Hevron Hills.

**Following the destruction of the vineyard at Tomer by Palestinian terrorists two days ago came more agricultural terrorism at Kibbutz Eilon yesterday where 400 tons of hay were torched by Palestinian terrorists.

Speaking of terrorists . . .

It turns out that the Hamas engineer who met his timely demise in Malaysia the other day was working with North Korea to create ballistic missiles for Hamas in Gaza.

Bravo to Ambassador Friedman . . .

. . . for insisting on correct terminology. Just a week after it was revealed that Friedman is attempting to rid the U.S. State Department lexicon of the word “occupied” when referring to Areas A and B of Judea and Samaria, it has now come to light that he is similarly insisting that “Judea and Samaria” be used in official materials instead of “West Bank.”

Regular readers of israelstreet know that we implemented these changes years ago.

Remember the picture of this billboard we posted . . .

. . . two days ago?

A billboard attacking the New Israel Fund that is popping up over Israel--this one was spotted in Tel Aviv today.

A billboard attacking the New Israel Fund.

The sign reads “The New Israel Fund is being thrown out of Israel.”

On one side of the sign is a picture of a soldier,  Yotam Zilber, a paratrooper. Captioned under his picture are the words “He is ours.”  On the other side is a picture of Talia Sasson, president of the New Israel Fund, with the inscription “The New Fund is fighting for its survival” and the caption “She is not.”

The billboard is produced by Im Tirtzu.

This morning two left-wing organizations went to the Israel High Court of Injustice to demand the billboards be taken down.

According to their complaint: “[Im Tirtzu’s] disgusting new campaign [is a blood libel against] Talia Sasson, a public servant and an Israeli patriot. . . it repeats Netanyahu’s [claim] which serves as a sewer pipe through which anti-Semitic campaigns from Europe are transferred to Israel. The blood that is spilled here will be on their hands . . .”

Can you believe this incoherent nonsense?

The accusation is that Netanyahu and Im Tirtzu are encouraging anti-Semitism, and are inciting people to violence against the New Israel Fund.

Instead of answering the charge that the New Israel Fund is doing everything within its power to delegitimize Israel, the leftist friends of the NIF resort to ad hominem attacks and allegations of incitement.

As they always do.

It is simply pathetic.

Speaking of the New Israel Fund . . .

We have another example today of how the NIF is spreading its tentacles throughout Israel.

Zizim, an organization that worked feverishly to defeat PM Netanyahu in the last election, issued this absurd statement today:

“We are an independent organization that does not accept money from governments, political parties or corporations but relies solely on private donations. We started out thanks to the New Israel Fund which is our single biggest contributor. We are proud of our partnership with the NIF [though which] we are able to act independently and uncompromisingly to advance our values . . .”

Zizim is “an independent organization”? Zizim is “able to act independently and uncompromisingly to advance” its “values”?

What a joke. Zizim is just about as independent as Hezbollah is from Iran.
