The fires continue burning out of control . . .

Look very closely at this blurry picture of what landed in an Israeli orchard in the Gaza envelope yesterday. Note the multi-colored balloons were carrying an incendiary “airplane.” Fortunately, it was spotted before a fire could start.

We went to sleep last night and woke up this morning here in Ashdod with the smell of smoke in the air–smoke coming from the large number fires burning out of control about 20 miles south of us on the Gaza border.

And while the IDF trotted out another technological marvel yesterday designed to inform southern Israelis where the next Molotov kites and balloons will land, the IDF and the government have for all intents and purposes thrown up their hands and declared there is nothing they can do to stop the launches.

Let’s try to put the fire situation into perspective.

There are 8019 square miles in Israel, or 5,132,160 acres.

The Gaza border with Israel is 25 miles (about 41 km) long. The so-called “Gaza envelope” which includes Sderot, and numerous kibbutzes and moshavs extends to a maximum depth of about 4 miles into Israel–in other words it comprises an area of some 100 square miles–around 64,000 acres.

In the last one hundred days, around 10,000 acres have been burned by 805 fires started by Molotov kites and balloons launched from Gaza. The only reason that more acres have not burned is because of the amazing efforts of firefighting teams and local citizens.

Yesterday alone, more than 20 fires broke out; the largest ones–and the ones we are smelling here in Ashdod–are undoubtedly the ones at Nahal Gerar and Nahal Shikma. One of the stories of the day was about how two 9-year-old children extinguished fires in their homes yesterday in Moshav Eshkol.

It is truly a pathetic situation when the security forces of this country cannot stop the threat coming across our border from Gaza. It is especially pathetic that the people who are already traumatized by the constant threat of missiles and mortars must now constantly watch the skies for incendiary kites and balloons.

The on-again off-again destruction of Khan Al-Ahmar . . .

Try to wrap your mind around this, dear reader. Khan Al-Ahmar is a small Palestinian encampment in Area C  which has already been ruled illegal by the Israel High Court of Justice. Yesterday, it was declared a closed military zone by the IDF, and destruction was scheduled for today.

However, one justice of the High Court issued an injunction at the last minute last night in response to a petition brought by the very residents of Khan Al-Ahmar which the Court had already ruled “illegal.”

It is simply amazing how the Court will jump through hoops to try to save illegal Palestinian settlements, but on the other hand, is more than willing to destroy or partially destroy Jewish communities.

TODAY’S BLOG:

OMG! OMG! The Iranians are disappointed! OMG! OMG!

extortion

Hmm. Let’s see. So as we all knew following President Trump’s pulling the U.S. out of the Iranian Nuclear Appeasement Deal that Iran’s next step would be to extort as much money out of the appeasing Europeans as possible.

So what has happened?

The Iranians have tried to ramp up the pressure:

two weeks ago, the they announced that uranium processing was resuming (as if it had ever stopped).

two days ago, Iran announced that if Iranian oil exports are reduced, its Revolutionary Guards would close down the Straits of Hormuz.

Yesterday, this was followed by a telephone call from Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to German Chancellor Merkel in which Rouhani told Merkel that the European package of monetary concessions to compensate Iran for the U.S. pulling out of the Agreement is “disappointing.”

According to the Iranian news media, Rouhani told Merkel that “the proposed package lacked an action plan or a clear road map for continuation of cooperation. It only included some general promises like previous EU statements.” Translated, this means that the European Union is not offering Iran enough money now or in the future.

That phone call was followed in short order by another Rouhani phone call to French President Emmanuel Macron in which Rouhani blustered even more: “The package proposed by Europe … does not meet all our demands.”

Demands? Translated, this is simple extortion: unless you give us what we want, Europe will face a nuclear Iran.

For the moment, Merkel and Macron have not responded though we can only suppose that when the remaining 5 members of the P5+1 meet in Vienna on Friday that they will plead for even more concessions to be offered to the ayatollahs in Tehran. After all, appeasement is about all that the Europeans know how to do.

As for the one P5+1 member who is no longer a member,  the United States responded to Iranian threats yesterday by calmly declaring that the U.S. Navy would ensure that the Straits remain open.

The European Union may be in “OMG the sky is falling” mode, but at least the Americans are not going to be cowed by Iranian threats. President Trump could care less if the Iranians are disappointed.
