Picture of the Day:
Liel Levitan has just won the European Children’s Chess Championship held in Poland. At 7 years old, she defeated a number of older competitors. She received her medal while draped in the Israel flag. Kolakevod!
The News on the Israeli Street
Northern Israel is still shaking . . .
With 12 earthquakes in the last 5 days, residents of the north in the vicinity of the Kineret are understandably nervous. Last night, a 3.2 earthquake was felt in Tiberias.
It is worthwhile noting that Israel has been socked by numerous major earthquakes during the last few thousand years. One of the most recent struck on July 11, 1927, and is estimated to have measured 7.5 on the Richter scale. Hundreds of people were killed and major damage occurred from Shechem to Jerusalem.
Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .
–An Israeli woman was wounded in the shoulder by terrorist gunfire in the Tel Rumeida neighborhood of Hevron.
–An Israeli woman was wounded by “rocks” near the Anata Junction and evacuated to Sha’are Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem.
–Other “rock” and Molotov attacks occurred at Hizma, Al-Muayyir, Halhul, on the Gush Etzion Road near Hevron, at the Hahash Checkpoint, Kiryat Netafim, Sha’ar Binyamin, Beit El, Yehuda Farm, Adam, and Karmei Tzur among other places.
–A Palestinian terrorist threw an IED at Israelis at the Jit Junction.
–Palestinian terrorists in Gaza continued launching Molotov kites and balloons into southern Israel. Since Israel is incapable of any military response, the government decided to close down the Kerem Shalom Crossing for an indefinite period.
Sort of.
“Humanitarian” supplies will be let through at the discretion of COGAT. And how is this for a tepid statement from the IDF:

“The State of Israel wants and works to improve the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip in many ways. However, in light of the situation in which the Hamas terrorist organization exploits the residents of the Gaza Strip and launches kites and firebombs and explodes towards the communities surrounding the Gaza Strip and does not allow the continuation of the routine in the vicinity, these steps were taken. If this trend persists, these measures will continue and even intensify.”
Don’t you feel nauseous, dear reader? If this trend persists—we have had more than 100 straight days of fires in the south.
UNRWA continues its beggary . . .
UNRWA announced for the umpteenth time yesterday that because of President Trump’s cutting of “tens of millions of dollars” to UNRWA, the organization is warning of “large cuts in aid programs for Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.”
Your humble servant has only one thing to say: “Start cutting and don’t stop until the abominable UNRWA is eliminated from the face of the planet.”
Iran and the Germans . . .
The Germans announced yesterday that they are considering turning over 300 million Euros to Iran. The money is being held in German bank accounts, and the Iranians claim to need it immediately because they are “cash poor” by virtue of the upcoming U.S. sanctions.
What a joke.
The Iranians are cash poor because of the needs of their terrorist infrastructure from Yemen to Lebanon.
Never mind. You can expect that the Germans will quickly turn over the cash.
The Weizmann Institute continues its climb . . .
Israel’s noted research institution now ranks 9th in the world in the quality of its weighted research (the number of times articles published by Weizmann scientists are cited elsewhere).
This is the Weizmann’s highest ranking ever. Your humble servant notes that his former academic home, the University of California rates highly as well:
Congratulations to the Weizmann!
Extraordinary heat and humidity grips Israel . . .
About the only sound you hear around Israel these days is the steady hum of air conditioners. The heat and humidity have forced many indoors, or to beaches and swimming pools.
Of course, a large portion of the world is experiencing record temperatures, but if you notice on the following map produced by The Daily Standard, Israel is just about the “darkest red” on the world map:
Israeli sovereignty in the Old City? . . .
It is simply amazing how the European Union brazenly attempts to establish facts on the ground throughout Area C of Judea and Samaria as well as in the Old City of Jerusalem.
Here is an illegal sign that popped up yesterday:
Note that the purpose of the working being done is “Safeguarding Cultural Heritage in the Old City of Jerusalem Project.”
Where in the world is our government? Why do we let the EU get away with such outrageous acts?
TODAY’S BLOG:
“In 20 years the Kinneret (Sea of Galilee) will not be there at all; it will be a swamp.”
On numerous occasions, we have noted on israelstreet that absurd government practices are reducing our national icon to a puddle. Whether it is giving water away to Jordan or giving water away to Israeli farmers, the result is that the Kinneret (Sea of Galilee) is disappearing.
And as it disappears, it is becoming so salty that soon its waters will not be able to be used by Jordan or Israel.
The Israel Water Authority noted the following yesterday:
*Virtually no fresh water is entering the lake. The five year drought has greatly decreased inflows into the lake–particularly from the Jordan River.
*Everyday, between 800,000 cubic meters and 1,670,000 cubic meters of water evaporates from the lake.
*The agricultural drain on the lake continues with farmers on both sides of the lake using the water for crops.
*The salinity of the lake is its highest ever.
The Water Authority declared yesterday that it will take “a miracle” to revive the Kinneret–even the possibility of putting desalinated water into the lake is years, perhaps a decade, away.
In the meantime, the situation literally worsens by the minute.
All of which underscores the sad truth which was privately expressed earlier this year by a water expert:
“The Kinneret will never go back to what it was, and in 20 years it won’t be there at all, it’ll be a swamp.”
