Quote of the Day:

“Somebody has to put an end to it.”

The unnamed mother of the IDF soldier who was seriously wounded yesterday by a Hamas sniper.

According to a doctor at Soroka Hospital, the soldier was wounded in the abdomen and chest. He is currently in a drug-induced coma, but is somehow described in “moderate condition.”

“There was a miracle . . . I wait for my son to wake up . . . I hope that all the soldiers will return safely and take care of themselves because I see that it is not over. . . Somebody has to put an end to it.”

Indeed somebody has to put an end to it, but it won’t be PM Netanyahu, Non-Defense Minister Lieberman, or do-nothing Chief of Staff Eizenkot. The government and IDF were quick to absolve Hamas and Islamic Jihad of any blame in yesterday’s sniper attack, issuing an idiotic “assessment” that it was carried out by a “rogue” terrorist operating with some “disorganized force.”

This morning, Israel even reopened the Kerem Shalom Crossing.

By the way, the soldier wounded yesterday belonged to the same unit as, and was a friend of Staff Sgt. Aviv Levy, the soldier who was killed by a sniper (perhaps the same one) last week.

You may remember, dear reader, that it was just five days ago, on July 21 that I wrote these words decrying the latest “ceasefire”:

” . . . that is the worst of all: it is a pitiful state of affairs in which our brave soldiers now realize they are sitting ducks in the gunsights of Hamas snipers.”

And so they are. They are still out there on the Border and still wearing the same useless ceramic “bulletproof” vests.

The News on the Israeli Street

Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .

**Following the Palestinian sniper attack which nearly killed another IDF officer yesterday, the IDF attacked seven Hamas targets. Apparently, we did not warn Hamas in advance this time; three terrorists were killed and others were critically wounded.

Then followed this series of events:

23:25 pm Wednesday:  Incoming missile and mortar alarms for Israeli communities in Zones 230 and 231 on the Gaza border near Nahal Oz and Sdot Negev. Three missiles exploded; no Israelis were wounded.

12:29 am Thursday: Incoming missile and mortar alarms for Israeli communities in Zones 223 and 224 on the Gaza border near Nahal Oz and Sdot Negev.  Two explosions were heard by residents.

1:21 am Thursday: Attempted missile launch from Gaza explodes at launch. One terrorist was wounded.

5:35 am Thursday: Incoming missile and mortar alarms for Israeli communities in Zones 230 and 231 on the Gaza border near Kissufim and Nirim. Two mortars exploded in “open areas.” One missile was intercepted by the Iron Dome.

Interspersed in the above attacks were several mortar attacks on our IDF soldiers.

**Meanwhile fires caused by incendiary balloons and kites continue ravaging southern Israel–one reaching as far as Kiryat Gat.

Yet another fire in a community in the Eshkol region yesterday.

Yet another fire in a community in the Eshkol region yesterday.

For some time now, we have been reporting on israelstreet how the government is actively suppressing any information about the fires. Yesterday, we had confirmation of that fact from a source who reported that a directive has come from the Minister of Internal Security Gilad Erdan to not report fires at all.

Erdan is said to have bizarrely written that “by not reporting the fires we may bring an end to the fire terrorism.”

The incredibly hot and humid weather continues . . .

Your humble servant was in Jerusalem yesterday where the weather is normally cool and dry. Yesterday the thermometer at my son’s home read 39 degrees C. and the humidity was overwhelming.

Not surprisingly, the all-time record for electrical use in Israel was set yesterday at 12,921 megawatts–surpassing the old record of 12,905 megawatts set in September 2015.

Despite the terror and the weather . . .

More new immigrants arrived in Israel yesterday on a flight organized by Nefesh B’Nefesh and the Jewish National Fund.

On the flight were 232 new immigrants from North America including 34 families with 127 children and 18 single men and women.

Welcome home!

TODAY’S BLOG:

The Latest IDF Excuse For Failure:

Our “Non-Hermetic Air Defense System”

We have fires burning throughout Israeli communities around Gaza that are not fires but “flares.” We have incoming missile alarms for missiles from Gaza that are “false alarms.” We have Hamas snipers shooting our troops who are not really Hamas snipers but “rogues.” We have highly organized terror groups in Gaza who are “disorganized fighting forces.”

We thought we had heard every conceivable excuse for failure in the IDF General Command dictionary until yesterday.

Somehow, two missiles reportedly fired by Islamic State terrorists in Syria crossed the Israel-Syria border, traveled between 7 and 10 kilometers through Israel airspace, and exploded in the Kinneret (Sea of Galilee).

All without any attempt at interception by our vaunted missile defense system.

In fact, the IDF would not even have known about the missiles had not Israelis swimming in the Kinneret reported that two objects had crashed into the lake.

Three hours later, search teams actually recovered missile parts indicating that they were BM-21 rockets of the type used by Islamic State. Immediately, the IDF characterized the missiles as “leakage” from the war taking place on the Syrian side of the border.

But this characterization completely misses the point.

How in the world did these missiles penetrate Israel airspace? How did they fly for some miles over Israel  before exploding in the Kinneret beside crowds of Israelis in the lake and on the shore?

The unfortunate fact is that our missile defense system isn’t nearly as effective as it is constantly advertised to be–as evidenced by Qassams that regularly hit Sderot and other southern communities despite the Iron Dome, the SS-21s the other day that managed to elude the Magic Wand system, and these latest two missiles which were completely undetected.

But leave it to the IDF to come up with yet another excuse for failure yesterday. This time a spokesman issued this Orwellian statement:

“The rockets were not intercepted due to Israel’s non-hermetic missile defense system.”

Say what? Non-hermetic?

Actually, for once, the IDF is telling the truth. Israel’s missile defense system is porous in the extreme–and this is in relation to relatively unsophisticated missiles.

Wait until the 100,000 sophisticated Hezbollah missiles are launched toward us.

It will be an unmitigated catastrophe.
