The News on the Israeli Street
Regular readers of israelstreet will remember this picture that we posted several weeks ago of a new barrier being built at Zikim:
Yesterday, a Palestinian terrorist from Gaza attacked Israeli naval engineering forces at this very spot. He was firing a machine gun and was carrying grenades. Ultimately, he was killed by return fire from Givati soldiers.
Not surprisingly, the IDF barely reported the attack at all; even the picture above came from a person on the ground.
Will they be built or not? . . .
One of the sorriest episodes of our current government deals with construction of Jewish homes in the community of Beit El.
Way back in 2012, PM Netanyahu promised Beit El residents that 300 new housing units would be built to compensate the community for the destruction of the Ulpana neighborhood on the orders of the Israel High Court.
It was announced this week that the Housing Ministry has approved 650 new residences for the community.
Will these residences ever be built? Your humble servant seriously doubts it–almost certainly, PM Netanyahu will step in and halt the construction before it gets off the ground.
The Chinese move to undermine the Iranian sanctions . . .
It was reported this morning that the Chinese are now leasing Iranian oil tankers to transport crude oil from Iran to China. The Chinese are determined to continue purchasing Iranian oil at the rate of about 1.5 billion dollars per month.

Muslims In Israel: The Statistics
The Israel Central Bureau of Statistics published a report yesterday which details in great specificity facts about the Muslim residents of Israel.
Demographic statistics:
*There are 1.562 million Israeli-Arab Muslims, 17.8% of the total population (note that Israeli-Arab Christians and Druze are not included in this number and percentage).
*The number of Israeli Muslims increased by 38,000 in 2017–an annual growth rate of 2.4%.
*After years of decline, the fertility rate for Israeli-Muslim women increased to 3.37 in 2017 (compared to a rate of 3.16 for Jewish women and 1.93% for Christian women).

21.8% in the Jerusalem (where they constitute 36.5% of the municipal population).

1% in the Tel Aviv District
*The four cities with the greatest Muslim population are:
Jerusalem (329,000), Rahat–a Bedouin city near Beersheva (66,000), Nazareth (54,300), Umm al Fahm (54,200)
So what is the bottom line?
There are no surprises. The reason for the high Muslim population of Jerusalem is because of the neighborhoods of eastern Jerusalem that were long ago annexed to the city.
Despite the increased fertility rate of the Israeli-Muslim women, the overall Jewish population is far outpacing the Israeli-Muslim population because of the sheer number of Jewish women in Israel.
