A heretofore “dry” stream in the Golan today as the rain continues to fall.

Unfortunately, the story of the continued rain is not all good.

An IDF soldier drowned in the middle of last night in a training accident when his vehicle tipped over in a stream like the one above.

Evyatar Yosefi was 20-years old. May his memory be for a blessing.

The News on the Israeli Street

Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .

In Judea and Samaria:

A knife-wielding Palestinian terrorist was shot at the Tapuach Junction when she attempted to attack Border Police officers after refusing orders to stop. She was shot in the leg, and her wound is not life-threatening.

Tekoa, Auja, the Maccabim Checkpoint, Migdal Oz, Jaba, Hala, Migdalim, Yitzhar, Sinjil, and Kiryat Arba: these were ten locations out of 27 where “rocks” and Molotovs were thrown by Palestinian terrorists at Israelis yesterday.

On the Gaza border:

Where the missiles fired yesterday from Gaza were aimed.

Palestinian terrorists in Gaza fired a volley of four Grad D5 missiles at southern Israel yesterday at 3:18 am. One missile was intercepted by the Iron Dome over Ashkelon. No Israelis were physically wounded; a number were treated for trauma.

The IDF’s never ending missile updates . . .

As we have often reported here on israelstreet, the IDF actively suppresses the number of missiles being fired out of Gaza by Hamas and Islamic Jihad. The rationale seems to be that reporting the real numbers while they are happening will make the IDF seem more vulnerable and Hamas and Islamic Jihad seem stronger.

For example, in the last outburst of missile firing in November, the IDF spokesman initially reported a total number 375 missiles fired at southern Israel. In the weeks after that mini-war ended, that number was subsequently updated to 400, then 425, then 450, then 500, then 525+.

This morning, in a somewhat surprising announcement, a senior IDF source revealed that 1,178 missiles were fired at the Israeli communities along the Gaza border during 2018.

The source went on however, to say that this was the most missiles ever fired in one year–a fact that is demonstrably untrue. One only has to look back at previous Israel-Hamas wars to find years when thousands of missiles were fired.

The UK and the EU continue their illegal construction . . .

All of the Palestinian structures and roads that you see are illegal.

All of the Palestinian structures and roads that you see are illegal.

Amazingly, the Netanyahu government is doing nothing to stop the paving of an illegally built road in the south Hevron Hills. Expected to be completed in February, the road will connect more than 500 illegally built Palestinian residences–all also financed by the UK and EU.

What is being built is a de facto spread-out city in the strategic triangle between eastern Gush Etzion, Mt. Hevron, and the Arad Valley.

The Regavim Movement that monitors illegal Palestinian building in Judea and Samaria demanded that the Civil Administration immediately intervene in this illegal construction.

It should be remembered that it was just last week that the same Civil Administration called in dozens of its workers, Border Police, and regular police to destroy two trailers at the Jewish fledgling community of Amiad.

The Dramatic Announcement That Wasn’t

At about 4 pm Israel time this afternoon, a Likud Party spokesman excitedly issued a statement that PM Netanyahu would make a “dramatic” announcement at 8 pm. The air of mystery was added to by the fact that the spokesman said that no journalists would be permitted into Netanyahu’s Balfour residence when the announcement was made.

Immediately, the Israeli media went wild with speculation as did all social media in the country. What was the dramatic announcement? What would Netanyahu say?

Some of the initial speculation:

*Netanyahu would announce that war with Iran was imminent.

*Netanyahu would announce that the U.S. was going to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

*Netanyahu would announce that he was going to resign.

*Netanyahu would announce that he was firing Naftali Bennett and Ayelet Shaked.

*Netanyahu would announce that a peace agreement had been reached with the Palestinians.

But then, the speculation began to devolve into black humor:

*Netanyahu would announce that he and Sarah were divorcing.

*Netanyahu would announce that his son Yair is getting married.

*Netanyahu would announce that the family was getting a new dog.

Finally at 5:30 pm, the Likud spokesman appeared again and announced that because of the “panic sweeping the country”, the announcement had been downgraded from “dramatic” to “special.”

By the time 8:00 pm rolled around, nobody knew what to think anymore.

But it quickly became clear when Netanyahu began to speak that there was nothing dramatic or special at all.

What Netanyahu talked about was a demand that he be able to confront his chief accusers in the various corruption cases face to face before Attorney General Mandleblit decides to indict him or not.

Apparently, Israeli law does allow for such a face to face confrontation–though in other countries such a confrontation only takes place in court at trial.

In sum, however, there is virtually no chance that Netanyahu will get what he really wants–which is to let off the hook until the election on April 9. From the Attorney General’s Office to the Justice Ministry to the Supreme Court, the cards are stacked against him.
