8 January 2019
Quote of the Day:
“I hope for a long ceasefire until the end of 2019. Until then, we will be able to complete the barrier. . . I do not believe that anything else can be done in Gaza.”
Gadi Eizenkot, former IDF Chief of Staff
If any quotation better exemplifies the utter incompetence and passivity of Eizenkot, your humble servant is yet to find it.
On the day after tens of incendiary balloons were launched into southern Israel and a volley of 4 Grad missiles was fired at Ashkelon, Eizenkot the dreamer seems to think that there is a ceasefire with Hamas–and hopes for a long one. The comment recalls to mind the infamous and disastrous “anemones” speech that then IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz before the 2014 war with Hamas came to an end.
What is worse is that Eizenkot cannot even envision any way of dealing with the terrorists in Gaza except for building the barrier/fence which even according to Eizenkot cannot be finished until the end of 2019–if there is a ceasefire.
What is there to do if there is no ceasefire? In Eizenkot’s world, absolutely nothing.
Whatever happened to boldly assertive commanders who courageously attacked the enemy? Benny Gantz and Gadi Eizenkot made them a thing of the past.

The News on the Israeli Street
Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .
On the Gaza border:
A group of terrorists infiltrated into Israel from northern Gaza and burned a sniper position near the Black Arrow monument–the same place where a busload of IDF soldiers narrowly missed being incinerated by an anti-tank missile two months ago.
In Samaria and Judea:
It has been another day of violence with more than 30 terror attacks.
Auja, Luban a-Sharqiya, near the Yossi Shuk monument, Karmela, Tekoa, Hizma, Tekoa, on the Gush Etzion-Hevron road, Havat Gilad, and Psagot were a few of the places where terrorists attacked Israeli motorists with “rocks” and Molotovs.
A major terrorist captured . . .
Another member of the Barghouti family, Assam Barghouti, was captured yesterday.
Assam Barghouti carried out the shooting terror attack at Givat Assaf which killed two soldiers, and participated in the one at Ofra which resulted in the death of baby Amiad Ish-Ran. Barghouti was captured by the combined work of the Israel Police special anti-terror unit, the IDF, and Shin Bet.
It is indeed unfortunate that Assam Barghouti was captured and not killed.
Great news . . .
Amiad Ish-Ran’s mother, Shira, was released from Sha’are Zedek Hospital today and transferred to Hadassah Mount Scopus for rehabilitation. You will recall that Shira was shot multiple times at Ofra and ultimately lost her baby (who was also shot).

A short-lived friendship? . . .
Just two weeks ago, President Trump was trumpeting his new relationship with Turkish PM Erdogan. That relationship, which blossomed during a telephone call, apparently resulted in Trump’s decision to rapidly withdraw the 2,200 American troops from Syria.
However, that decision has been considerably walked back with a new timeline of withdrawal stretched out to April.
And whereas the impetus for Trump’s decision was Erdogan’s promise that the Turks would finish off Islamic State, Erdogan’s subsequent statements about finishing off the Kurds has aroused the concern of the U.S. to the point that apparently more American soldiers were sent to northern Syria yesterday.
On top of that, there were reports today that Mossad Chief Yossi Cohen met with the heads of the defense and security establishments of several Gulf countries a few weeks ago. The subject of their talks was that Turkey has become the main problem in Syria.
All of which leads to what happened yesterday in Ankara where Trump National Security Adviser John Bolton was brazenly shunned by the Turks. PM Erdogan pointedly refused to meet with him.

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem Sinks Further
Into Anti-Israel Academic Slime
Regular readers of israelstreet are obviously aware of the events of last week when German-born lecturer Carola Hilfrich of Hebrew University of Jerusalem loudly insulted a female student in her class because she was wearing her IDF uniform.
That insult spurred immediate protests from around the political spectrum. Shortly afterward the University and the lecturer issued a tepid apology. Two days ago, students and teachers across Israel who are in the IDF or IDF reserves were asked to wear their uniforms to class. Many did.
In the meantime, the “left” has cranked up its “free speech” machine to support Hilfrich. Several dozen other lecturers at Hebrew University signed a statement of support of Hilfrich yesterday. In addition, leftists are carrying out daily demonstrations at Hebrew University:
Fortunately, the Im Tirtzu organization is opposing the “left” with counter-demonstrations. They led a cohort of uniformed students to Hilfrich’s class yesterday. As soon as they walked into the class, Hilfrich walked out and the class was canceled.
The Im Tirtzu chapter president at Hebrew University issued this statement yesterday: “We will continue to stand alongside the IDF officer who was shamefully scolded by the professor and will continue to demand that the administration dismiss the professor. We will not permit a situation on campus in which students serving in the IDF are harassed for their service.”
As if all of this is not enough, another teacher at Hebrew University is now on the hot seat.
It has come to light that senior Prof. Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian, is scheduled to speak in Amsterdam later this month. The subject of her nauseating talk is that “Israel is exploiting Palestinian Arab children to promote arms sales.” According to the event brochure, Shalhoub-Kevorkian will discuss how Israel uses the “bodies and lives” and “daily suffering” of Palestinians to sell more weapons.*
Her speech is part of a conference entitled “Technologies of Violence at Damascus Gate” is being organized by the self-proclaimed international “human rights” group Faculty for Israeli-Palestinian Peace (FFIPP) that opposes recognition of Israel.
If you can believe this, Shalhoub-Kevorkian is the Lawrence D. Biele Chair of Law at Hebrew University, yet another example of how low the Hebrew University has sunk into the slime of anti-Israel academia.
