The News On The Israeli Street

Palestinian terror on Friday and Saturday . . .

In Judea and Samaria:

Palestinian terrorists stabbed an Israeli youth who was walking alone near the Adi Ad community. Though wounded, the boy escaped. As security forces hunted for the attackers, terrorists attacked them as well. One terrorist was killed; others were wounded.

Palestinian terrorists attacked a busload of Israelis on the road between Tekoa and Har Homa:

All told, more than 50 such terror attacks took place in Judea and Samaria over the last 48 hours.

On the Gaza border:

Palestinian terrorists launched dozens of explosive balloons into southern Israel over the weekend:

One of the fires caused by balloons at Nahal Oz last night:

Fortunately, this fire was spotted quickly enough so that it could be put out before too much damage was done.

The Jordanian Army Takes Over  “The Island of Peace”

It was just two months ago that your humble servant and his wife were at Naharayim on the border with Jordan.

At Nayah

On the “Island of Peace” at Naharayim on November 12.

Despite the smiles on our faces, this is a very sad place. Note the hill in the background: it was from this hill that a Jordanian soldier opened fire on a group of teenaged Israeli school girls who were on a school field trip back in 1997.

Seven of them were murdered.

If you look back at the picture above with my wife and me, you will notice the mounds of sand–each of which has the first name of one of the dead girls.

We had decided to go to the memorial site because King Abdullah had just announced in October that the Jordanians were not going to renew Israel’s lease on the tiny piece of land (a 25 year lease obtained at the signing of the Israel-Jordan peace treaty in 1994–with a supposed option for 25 more years) , and we suspected that when the current lease ended in November of 2019, Israelis would no longer be allowed to go there.

Guess what?

Three days ago, on Thursday, the Jordanian Army showed up at the site and blocked the entry of hundreds of Israelis. No Israelis have been allowed to visit the site since.

The Israeli managers at the site have expressed astonishment. One of them, Idan Greenbaum, issuing this statement: “We continue to hope that the leaders of both countries, Jordan and Israel, will act with coordination and discretion to allow citizens on both sides to continue to visit the island of peace, which should continue to serve as a symbol of good neighborly relations between the parties.”

King Abdullah act with coordination and discretion? King Abdullah support good neighborly relations?

What a joke.

As King Abdullah remarked several days ago:

“Our decision is to end the lease stems from our desire to do what is required for Jordan and the Jordanians.”

A rusting sign that I took a picture of while there in November stands as mute testament to the utter failure Israel’s efforts to make peace with Jordan in the area:

NAH

In the 25 years since the the Jordanian-Israeli “peace” treaty was signed, the Jordanians have steadfastly refused to engage in projects with Israel.

That the Jordanian army showed up ten months early to take control of the area should come as no surprise to anyone.

Tomorrow or at some point in the near future, they will bulldoze the site.
