TODAY’S BLOG:

Insanity Reigns Supreme In Yet Another Israeli Military Court

Let’s begin today by recalling this series of events:

1. On December 9, seven Israelis were wounded at Ofra when a Palestinian terrorist being driven by an accomplice opened fire with a machine gun at a bus stop. One of the wounded women was pregnant and prematurely gave birth to a son who died on December 12.  The terrorists escaped.

2. On December 13, two IDF soldiers belonging to the Netzach Yehuda Battalion*, Yuval Yosef (20) and Yosef Cohen (19), were murdered at the hitchhiking station beside the Givat Assaf Junction.

A car pulled up beside the station; a terrorist got out and opened fire on those standing there. The terrorist then returned to his car and was driven away by an accomplice.

3. Members of the Netzach Yehuda Battalion quickly launched a manhunt for the terrorists. In the meantime, it became evident that the main terror suspect in both the Ofra and Givat Assaf shootings was named Assam Barghouti.

4. Five Netzach Yehuda soldiers subsequently captured 5 Palestinians known to be associated with Barghouti. Faced with an urgent situation in which they knew that Barghouti might strike again at any time, the soldiers harshly interrogated the Palestinians to find out where Barghouti was hiding.

The “harsh interrogation” consisted of blindfolding, handcuffing, and slapping and punching the Palestinians.

5. In short order, the Palestinians–now believed to be accomplices of Barghouti–revealed where Barghouti was hiding.

6. A group of soldiers and police surrounded Barghouti’s hideout. In the ensuing shootout, Barghouti was killed. It was later determined that Barghouti had planned to murder more Israelis.

Instead of being lauded for their meritorious actions in helping discover Barghouti, all five of the Netzach Yehudi soldiers were outrageously indicted in military court this morning.

The Military Advocate General’s Office charged them with “aggravated abuse” of the Palestinians. Not only were they indicted, but also the military prosecution demanded that they be detained until their trials are over.

Knesset member and head of the National Union Party Bezalel Smotrich spoke for many of us this morning when he said:

“Turning IDF soldiers into criminal offenders harms security and lives, and the Military Advocate General has again lost its common sense and harmed the IDF . . . The heroic IDF fighters that we send to fight in our name against a cruel enemy deserve our backing [and must] not be abandoned in the name of distorted legal morality.”

Moti Yosef, the father of one of the soldiers killed by Barghouti at Givat Assaf, blasted the decision to indict the soldiers: What was expected of them – to serve coffee to the murderers of their comrades and hug them?”

Your humble servant looks this indictment and wonders what in the world has happened in Israel? How are murderers and their accomplices now considered victims, and how are our heroic soldiers accused of being criminals?

*Addendum from Arutz Sheva: “Nahal Haredi was founded a few years ago by Los Angeles businessman David Hager in order to integrate the young haredi (ultra-orthodox) men into the Israel Defense Force on the mission of defending the Land of Israeli. Nahal Haredi started with a few dozen soldiers, but today includes thousands.

One of the main battalions of Nahal Haredi is Netzach Yehuda, which operates in Judea and Samaria and takes part in combat and operative missions.”
