The News On The Israeli Street
Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .
On the Gaza border:
An incendiary balloon exploded on a house in a kibbutz in the Eshkol region yesterday.
In response, the IDF bombed two, empty, Hamas observation posts in the sand dunes around Gaza.
In Judea and Samaria:
In additional to the usual rash of “rock” and Molotov attacks, there is a report this evening (unconfirmed) of a shooting attack at the Hawara Checkpoint.
Regular readers of israelstreet know that Hawara is a flashpoint where terrorists regularly attack Israeli soldiers and civilians.
Some good news about MADA . . . at least temporarily . . .
As we noted on israelstreet several days ago, a disastrous situation was about to be established in much of Judea and Samaria this coming Sunday. MADA, Israel’s premier emergency paramedic service, had announced that it was suspending service to much of Judea and Samaria because of budget cuts.
Following that announcement, Deputy Health Minister Yaakov Litzman intervened and allocated funds to keep MADA service afloat for one more month.
It is now hoped that by April 1, funds will be found to continue MADA service for the entire year.
More allegations of sexual impropriety against Benny Gantz . . .
As reported previously here on israelstreet, the head of the new Blue and White Party, failed IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz, has been accused by an Israeli woman who now lives in New York of cornering her and exposing himself when he was an adult and she was 14 years old. She says that Gantz’s actions “ruined” her life.
In response to this accusation, Gantz has filed a $140,000 libel suit against the woman.
In return, she has announced that she is lodging a criminal complaint against Gantz.
What is more, another accusation was made yesterday, namely that Gantz also exposed himself to a 7-year-old girl–and that the exposure was witnessed by several people who are willing to testify to the incident.
TODAY’S BLOG:
The Israel Judicial System Puts Netanyahu In Its Crosshairs
All of the frantic news spewing out the leftist Israeli media today has been about the impending recommendations from Attorney General Mandelblit that PM Netanyahu be indicted for fraud and breach of trust in Cases 1000 and 2000, and for bribery in Case 4000.

As regular readers of israelstreet know, Case 1000 revolves around claims Netanyahu received expensive gifts (cigars, champagne, etc) from the businessman Arnon Milchan in exchange for “favors.” The three main “favors” were Netanyahu’s help with a U.S. Visa problem Milchan had, an attempt (which failed) to set up a duty-free zone along the Jordanian border, and a law supported by Netanyahu and passed by the Knesset which extended tax benefits for returning Israelis.
Was it a favor for the PM to help a person with a U.S. Visa problem? Yes, it was a favor, but it is a favor that prime ministers and presidents and other officials do for people all the time–and one that PM Netanyahu had helped others with.
Was it a favor to try to set up a duty-free zone? Yes, but this would have benefited thousands if not hundreds of thousands of Israelis, not just Milchan.
Was it a favor to urge passage of a law extending tax benefits? Yes, but again, this law benefits thousands of “returning” Israelis.
In Case 2000, Netanyahu is accused of advancing a law to stop the newspaper Israel Hayom from being distributed freely everyday – in exchange for favorable coverage in another newspaper Yedioth Aharonot.
What are the problems with this case? In the first place, the idea that Netanyahu would sabotage Israel Hayom, the newspaper of his close friend Sheldon Adelson, is far-fetched at best. Second, the law never made it through the Knesset; Israel Hayom is still given out for free everyday on every street corner in Israel. Third, as everyone knows, Yedioth Aharonot was and is one of the most viciously anti-Netanyahu platforms in the country.
In Case 4000, PM Netanyahu is accused of urging regulatory changes which would benefit the Bezeq telecommunications company, owned by Shaul Elovitch, in exchange for favorable coverage from the Walla! news site owned by Elovitch.
The problems with this case? The regulatory changes made which benefited Bezeq were all made by a Regulatory Commission which Netanyahu had virtually no influence over. What is more, according to people who have counted, Walla! ran 2 articles favorable to Netanyahu during this period–and dozens that were not.
So where do we go from here?
Following the publication of the accusations (recommendations for indictment), a hearing must be held to decide if indictments will actually be handed down. At this point, it is uncertain when the hearing or hearings will take place. One time frame being discussed is about four months from now.
As we noted yesterday, Mandelblit has ludicrously announced that he will not release the supporting evidence for these recommendations until April 10, the day after the election because to do so might influence the election.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
What a joke.
Why is this ludicrous?
Every day there is a river of leaks coming from the Attorney General’s office, State Prosecutor’s office, and the Israel police. Everything the Attorney General thinks he has will be public knowledge within a week if not by tomorrow. In fact, some details have already emerged tonight from “unnamed sources.”
Also, does Mandelblit really believe that his issuing of the recommendations for indictment will not influence the elections? If he was really afraid of influencing the election, Mandelblit would have waited until April 10 to issue his recommendations.
Finally, anyone who reads israelstreet with any regularity knows that your humble servant is no big fan of PM Netanyahu. Having said that, these recommendations that Mandelblit has brought against the prime minister are absurd and should be thrown out at the first opportunity.
However, as we all know, the Israeli judiciary is peopled by leftist judges who are licking their chops over the prospect of hauling Netanyahu into court, convicting him, and ousting him as prime minister.
