The News on the Israeli Street
Palestinian terror on the Gaza border . . .
*In the last few hours, terrorists in Gaza have opened fire on IDF positions at the Karni Crossing and at Nahal Oz.
*Yesterday, two more rockets were fired into southern Israel. Alarms went off belatedly as explosions were heard. The IDF spokesman immediately declared that there were no rockets fired, and that the explosion was that of a bomb that terrorists had placed on the border fence. The spokesman also proclaimed that the incoming missile alarms were activated by the same explosion.
These preposterous statements were soon laid to rest when one of the exploded rockets was found in an “open area” in the Eshkol region. The IDF story quickly changed to note that 1 rocket was fired. But then, it was also noted that the Iron Dome had intercepted one incoming missile–an interception report which happened to be true.
So, it turns out that one missile hit the Eshkol region and another was intercepted by the Iron Dome.
And you wonder why residents of southern Israel never believe the IDF spokesman?

On the Syrian border . . .
Several days ago, the Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad declared that “Syria will attack Israel if it does not leave the Golan Heights.”
He followed this up yesterday in a meeting with a senior United Nations officials at which he ranted: “We will not hesitate to confront Israel, which acts violently and harms regional security. We are also not afraid of its supporters which help perpetuate the occupation in the Golan Heights.”
The occupation in the Golan Heights?
Syria began its occupation of the Golan Heights when it gained its independence April 17, 1946. During the next 21 years, Syria used the elevation of the Heights to terrorize Jews living at their base.
On June 9, 1967–more than half a century ago–Israel liberated the Golan Heights, took control, and de facto annexed them on December 14, 1981. Today, the Golan Heights are an integral part of Israel–Arab and United Nations’ declarations to the contrary.
As to those “supporters” that Mekdad referred to, there is reason to believe that one of them, the United States, is actively considering recognizing the reality that the Golan Heights belong to Israel.

The Outrageous Impending Agreement Between Israel and Hamas
Outrageously, Egypt continues to mediate intense negotiations between Israel and Hamas which are expected to come to a conclusion in the coming week.
According to sources in Egypt, a new agreement will consist of two phases:
The first phase: during the first 15 days after signing, Israel will “ease” the humanitarian situation in Gaza, and expand the fishing area from 9 to 15 miles.
The second phase: Israel will increase the electricity supply to Gaza to at least 8 hours a day and will increase the passage of goods in and out of Gaza. Israel will also agree to discuss the construction of an airport and port in Gaza.
During the second phase, which has no time duration, Hamas will commit to “gradually” stopping attacks on the border fence and launching of explosive balloons into Israel–with the caveat that “this is Israel’s last chance to stop an escalation in the fighting.”
If all of this seems familiar, it should because we’ve been down this road tens of times with Hamas. We give and give and give, and it gives nothing but a vague promise to “gradually” reduce attacks on our soldiers and civilians.
But it never does.
In a larger sense, the absurdity of this agreement is that it places the onus on Israel and suggests that Gaza is Israel’s responsibility.
Forget for a moment that the infantile Palestinians are incapable of helping themselves preferring to wallow instead in supposed victimhood, why is it always Israel’s responsibility to increase humanitarian efforts and not Egypt’s?
Israel already sends hundreds of truckloads of supplies into Gaza everyday while Egypt sends none. Israel already supplies electricity to Gaza while Egypt supplies just a trickle. Unbelievably, we do this while they actively try to kill our soldiers and civilians each and every day.
Why can’t we just cut the umbilical cord to Gaza?
Why do we continue to prop up Hamas by seeking to appease their terrorism?
If you have the answer, please let your humble servant know.
