“I’m sure we’ll catch the terrorist.”

Another major terror attack, another Israeli dead, two other Israelis critically wounded.

Another Israeli dead.

19-year-old Sgt. Gal Keidan.

This time it was a terrorist who apparently stabbed Keidan at the Ariel Junction, then stole his weapon and shot Rabbi Ahiad Ettinger who heroically attempted to stop him, and next went to the Gitai Avisar Junction where he shot at least one more soldier.

By the way, the first reports are that there were soldiers at the Ariel Junction, but they did not initially try to shoot the terrorist. You might ask why not?  But if you are are a regular reader of israelstreet, you know why not.

Then in our never ending theater of the absurd in Israel, the terror attacks were followed by a solemn pronouncement by PM Netanyahu:

“I’m sure we will catch the terrorist.”

And you know what? We probably will catch the terrorist, and hopefully when we do, we will kill him.

But that will not bring back our dead.

Instead, you know what a statement like that will bring?

It will bring more deadly terrorist attacks.

We see it everyday on the Gaza border. Every time missiles from Gaza strike southern Israel and beyond, Israeli politicians rush to the podium to proclaim: “Don’t worry, we’ll get those responsible.” Every time, Palestinian terrorists attack our soldiers at the Border Fence, our politicians proclaim: “We’ll make them pay.”

But we don’t get those who are responsible, and we don’t make anyone pay.

The simple fact is that any soldier who shoots a terrorist in today’s IDF is immediately investigated for a possible court-martial.

The Israeli military has become a fundamentally passive entity. The IDF waits, hesitates, and condemns its own soldiers who take action.

Yes, Bibi. We’ll catch the terrorist responsible for the terror today. But without a basic change in strategy earmarked by a proactive assault on terrorism, how many days will it be until another terrorist or terrorists do exactly the same thing?

With the same result: more Israelis dead.
