TODAY’S BLOG:
Massive Computer Glitches, Uncounted Ballots, Egregious Misreporting: The Sordid Tale of the Tuesday Election
Let’s begin today’s blog with where we stopped yesterday:
“One last note. Before we get too immersed in victory celebrations today, we had President Trump standing on the White House lawn this morning congratulating Netanyahu as a man of peace–and once again talking about how there is “a chance for peace between Israelis and Palestinians.” In other words, the other Trump shoe is about to drop.”
Your humble servant ended this way to show the absolute importance of Naftali Bennett and Ayelet Shaked being in the new coalition. They and a few members of the Union of Rightist Parties will be the only ones who will speak up against concessions that President Trump will demand of Israel. Certainly, PM Netanyahu will not.
And for a few moments last night, it was widely reported that Bennett and Shaked’s “New Right” party had indeed passed the 3.25% threshold. However almost as quickly as that wonderful news was reported, it was then reported that the New Right had not passed the threshold because the total number of ballots had not been accurately reported on the Election Commission website because of a computer glitch.
And 3.25% of this new total of ballots was a higher number of votes than had previously been thought necessary to pass the threshold. Suddenly, Bennett and Shaked found themselves a little more than a thousand votes short.
It was about at this point numerous reports of irregularities began to be reported.

Here are a few:
1. This morning the Central Election Commission admitted that the software it used to feed data into their computers was flawed. At least 46 polling stations reported at least 60,000 fictitious votes. The Elections Commission is busy recounting votes.
2. It turns out that at least 30 ballot boxes were found this morning which were not counted at all.
3. At least two polling stations in Samaria report egregious errors in reporting. For example, at Itamar–which is one of the most right-wing places in Israel–the party receiving one of the largest numbers of votes was that of the extreme leftist Ahmed Tibi. Fortunately, the manager of that polling station kept a separate record of the actual votes that were cast (Tibi’s party actually received 0 votes).
4. During the counting of the soldiers’ votes last night, at precisely the moment when Bennett and Shaked’s New Right Party appeared to pass the threshold, all New Right election observers were ordered out of the counting area.
Where do matters stand now?
Bennett and Shaked remain hopeful, but they remain out. Oddly enough (because no love is lost between Bennett and Netanyahu), Likud representatives are at the Election Commission acting on behalf of the New Right. At the moment, there is no reason to believe that Bennett and Shaked’s efforts will prove successful.
Meanwhile, conflicting numbers as to the actual mandates each party received in the election continue to abound. For example, in some reports, Likud now has 36 seats whereas in others, it remains with 35. The number of Blue and White seats seems to be fluctuating between 34 and 35. Similarly, it is possible that Meretz has gained a seat and United Torah Judaism and United Right have each lost a seat. Other reports have Moshe Kahlon’s Kulanu Party gaining a seat.
In short, the “right block” appears to be holding steady at 65 with Likud and Kulanu gaining a seat to offset the loss of the seat from United Torah Judaism and the United Right. Thus, PM Netanyahu remains far more likely to be able to form a coalition than Gantz/Lapid of the Blue and White Party.
Once again, the Election Commission has announced that final results will not be available until April 17. The Chairman of the Election Commission has just announced that there was no “cyber attack” during the election. That is hardly comforting.
In sum, the situation is appalling.
Here we have a country capable of putting a spacecraft on the moon, but we do not possess the computer knowledge to conduct an election.
Unbelievable.
