One Of Israel’s Best Friends In Jerusalem Yesterday
The News on the Israeli Street
Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .
In Judea and Samaria:
The Jit Junction, Al Aruv, Beit El, Givat Assaf, Qalandiya, Azzun, Huwara: these were but a few of the places where Palestinian terrorists attacked Israelis with “rocks” and Molotovs.
Palestinian terrorists also placed two IEDs near the Tunnel Road, causing the road to be blocked until IDF sappers could neutralize the devices.
On the Gaza border:
Sha’ar Hanegev with 4 and Be’eri with 3 were two of the hardest hit fire locations.
All told, another record was set with 19 fires started by explosive balloons sent by Palestinian terrorists in Gaza.
19 fires, and again no IDF response at all.
That is 37 fires in the last 48 hours.
However, the IDF did respond to a group of terrorists who approached the border fence near the Beit Hanoun checkpoint by firing on them.
Out of the woodwork crawls . . .
Ehud Barak.
Yes, the prime minister who brought us the unilateral disastrous withdrawal from Lebanon, the nearly disastrous deal with the Palestinians in 2000, and the second intifada now wants to be prime minister again.
And is suddenly the new savior of the Israeli left.
On a night when the fires raging across the Gaza envelope should have been the main news on Israeli television, instead we got 10 minutes of Ehud Barak announcing the formation of a new political party.
All we need now is for convicted criminal and former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to join the circus.

“Bibi’s Going To Lose This Time”
Your humble servant and his wife were out for their early morning walk this morning along the lovely Ashdod promenade that runs from the Byzantine fort to lifeguard station number 7.
We were observing a pair of deer and a fox out in the dunes, and checking the archaeological dig up on top of a nearby hill. Along the way, we found ourselves in between a group of four walkers with two men in front of us and two behind.
All of these men were originally from North Africa–their Hebrew accent was telling— and are undoubtedly all Likud stalwarts and Netanyahu supporters. They are the kind of people that have formed the base of Netanyahu’s support over the years.
The conversations we heard from the front and back were remarkable because all four men have reached the conclusion that Netanyahu’s string has run out and that he’s going to lose on September 17.
Why? According to the men, Netanyahu’s wounds are all self-inflicted.
The reasons we heard: “Netanyahu should have never tried to pass the law to make him immune from prosecution while he is prime minister”; “Netanyahu cares more about himself than Likud”; “Netanyahu has lost touch with the people in the South”; “Netanyahu should step aside until his legal troubles are over” . . . and on and on.
In general, the mood of the men was one of “Netanyahu fatigue.” It is a mood shared by Israelis across the political spectrum.
It is this mood that is driving Netanyahu to try to cancel the new election and un-dissolve the Knesset. Given the fact that the polls in Israel are notoriously unreliable, they all nevertheless seem to be pointing in the direction of a loss for the Israeli “right.”
It is not that Israelis don’t appreciate Netanyahu and the amazing way he has navigated relations with President Trump resulting in extreme sanctions on Iran, U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, and the move of the American Embassy to Jerusalem. It is just that they are tired of Bibi and his problems.
At the very least, your humble servant believes that the time has come for Bibi to declare that if he is indicted at the beginning of October, he will step aside until his trials are over. There is no way he can focus on being Prime Minister while fighting indictments and standing trial.
In fact, he cannot focus on being Prime Minister now.
Name a replacement and be ready to relinquish power for the good of the country, Likud, and the Israeli “right.”
