The News On The Israeli Street
Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .
On the Gaza border:
Four large fires erupted yesterday as a result of explosive balloons launched from Gaza, at Kissufim, Nahal Oz, Sha’ar Hanagev, and Moshav Yachini. In the Moshav Yachini fire alone, the damage is estimated at some 400,000 shekels (around $110,000).
Hundreds of balloons were launched from the Al Bureij area of Gaza late last night. Apparently, most malfunctioned and blew up over Gaza.
The major news at the Gaza border fence yesterday concerned this Hamas terrorist:
According to Hamas, Al-Adham–a Hamas field commander–was at the border fence yesterday to try to prevent two other Hamasniks from attacking the fence, and also according to Hamas, Al-Adham was unarmed.
If all of that “according to Hamas” seems far-fetched to you and me, it didn’t seem far-fetched to our wonderful IDF General Command that was quick to apologize to Hamas for the killing of its terrorist and quick to blame our IDF soldiers for shooting the terrorist “without permission.”
In any case, Hamas and Islamic Jihad have sworn revenge for Al-Adham’s timely demise.
In Judea and Samaria:
There were numerous attacks throughout the day.
Just north of Shechem, Palestinians in a car threw an improvised grenade at our soldiers who were manning a checkpoint. The car then sped into Shechem. At last report, the IDF had closed down the entrances and exits from the city in an effort to find the perpetrators.
“Rock” and Molotov assaults took place once again on the Gush Etzion-Hebron road near the settlement of Al-Aruv, at Karmei Tzur, at Beit Ummar, Hizma, and at Atarot.

Getting Up To Speed On the September 17th Election
Now that we know that there will definitely be an election on September 17, and now that all parties are in full campaign mode, your humble servant thinks that it might be a good idea to get you up to speed today on where things stand.
Before showing you the latest poll, consider recent developments.
Former PM Ehud Barak who entered the race with a meteoric start up two weeks ago is seeing a meteoric decline especially as his deep connections with arrested, accused pedophile Jeffrey Epstein become more known by the hour.
Former Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked cannot seem to make up her mind what to do. Remember that in April, her and Naftali Bennett’s New Right Party did not make the threshold. Now Shaked is being wooed by every party on the right except for Likud. In the latter regard, PM Netanyahu’s wife Sara has let it be known that she will not countenance Shaked in Likud (the reasons are unclear). So, will Shaked have her own party or join with the Right Party or team up with Bennett again?
Meanwhile, Avigdor Lieberman is having the time of his life as the focus of attention. He has made it clear that his Yisrael Beiteinu party will not be in any coalition with the Orthodox Shas and UTJ parties–as long as they do not accept his version of the proposed draft law. So is Lieberman right, left, or something else?
Having mentioned Barak, Shaked, and Lieberman, let’s take a look at the latest poll today. This one comes from the leftist “Maariv” polling people, and is probably just as unreliable as all other Israel polls except to give us a glimpse at what is going on:
Explanation:
Shas and UTJ are the ultra-orthodox parties.
Shaked refers to a party that does not yet exist.
Democratic is the name of Ehud Barak’s new party.
Right is an amalgamation of Jewish Home, National Union, the New Right, and Jewish Power (an amalgamation that may or may not run together).
What can we discern from this?
The right block has 58 potential mandates, the left 44. The 44 on the left does not include the Arab parties which have announced that neither Likud nor Blue and White are acceptable. Similarly, leftist Blue and White has announced it will not join a coalition with the Arabs.
Virtually every other party polls the same as it did in April before the last election–except for Lieberman which has slightly risen from 5 to 8.
The bottom line:
Unless something dramatic happens, Israel will wake up on September 18 facing the same mess as it faced on April 10, the day after the last election. Avigdor Lieberman will hold the key as to whether PM Netanyahu will serve another term.
