The News on the Israeli Street
From Judea and Samaria . . .
Eight Palestinian terrorists were captured in raids last night. Wanted for involvement in terrorist attacks against civilians and security forces, the eight were armed with assault rifles and ammunition.
Here come Ilhan Omar and Rashida Talib . . .
Your humble servant still cannot understand why in the world Israel is permitting Omar and Talib into Israel. For the sake of U.S. relations? To stay on good terms with the U.S. House of Representatives? The U.S. and the House would not have cared one whit if we had kept these two anti-Israel bashers out.
They are now scheduled to show up on Saturday, and will do precisely what I predicted several weeks ago. They will pray at the Temple Mount, and go to Ramallah, Hevron, and Bethlehem where they will be welcomed as heroes. Accompanied by a phalanx of local and international reporters, they will do everything within their power to trash Israel.
Amazingly, it was President Trump who suggested that Israel should enforce its own law about not letting BDS supporters into the country, but it was the government of Benjamin Netanyahu that decided otherwise. Now, absurdly, Netanyahu is rumored to wish he had followed Trump’s advice.
Who runs Israel? . . .
In case you missed it, there has been a pitched battle in Afula over the last few weeks.
The ultra-orthodox scheduled a concert there for the ultra-orthodox. The concert was to take place outside in a municipal area. As you can imagine, the concert was to organized to be “separated gender” with men and women sitting in separate sections.
As you can also imagine this seating arrangement aroused the fury of various women’s and secular groups who sued to stop the segregated seating.
After first winning a court decision against the organization of the concert, the opposing groups lost when a district court in Nazareth intervened two days ago and ruled that the separated seating could proceed. And so it did last night.
However, in the meantime, women’s groups took the case to the Israel Supreme Court which ruled that the district judge had exceeded his authority (they did not rule on the issue of the separated seating). The justices knowingly issued their ruling last night after the concert had already begun.
The bottom line is that in Israel, the Supreme Court has the ultimate power.
We will soon see it in another area.
Yesterday the Israel Election Commission voted to allow the Jewish Power Party to run in the September 17 elections–and more specifically to allow two of its members, Baruch Marzel and Benny Gopstein, to be on their election list.
The party and its members were all vehemently opposed by speakers from the Israeli left.
You can be sure that it will not be long before the Israel Supreme Court weighs in again and disqualifies Marzel and Gopstein.

Again, whether it be a district judge, Election Commission, or city garbage pick-up department, the Israel Supreme Court happily involves itself in every aspect of Israeli life. Your humble servant is writing this facetiously, but we really don’t need any Knesset, lower courts, municipal commissions, or anything else.
Fewer Israelis are emigrating . . .
Interestingly, despite the exorbitant prices here, the incessant terrorism, and the myriad of external threats facing Israel, the number of Israelis who permanently leave Israel is dropping.
Statistics have just been released for 2017. They show:
*14,300 Israelis left the country in 2017 (8,400 returned home). This was the lowest number of emigrants since 1989.
*52% of the Israelis who left were born outside of Israel. 66% of those who left were born in Europe; 22.7% were born in North America or Australia.
*71% of the 14,300 who left were Jews, 24% were non-Arab Christians or residents with no listed religion (mainly people who had immigrated to Israel from Russia), and 5% were Arabs.
TODAY’S BLOG:
Kill An Israeli, Get A University Degree!
You may remember, dear reader, that way back in 2011, our Israeli government wisely and belatedly decided that Palestinian terrorists incarcerated in Israeli prisoners should not have the right to study for and receive university degrees.
That decision was affirmed in 2015 when a seven-judge panel ruled that the Israel Prison Service could and should continue this prohibition.
But guess what?
Our notoriously inept and pusillanimous Prison Service did not, and does not enforce this prohibition at all.
It turns out that there are currently 5,700 Palestinian terrorists imprisoned in Israel. Unbelievably, 1026 of them are currently studying for a graduate or undergraduate degree. Most of them (906) are studying at the “Open University of Al-Quds” and are majoring in journalism, media, and political science.
When a prisoner finishes his or her degree studies, the PLO even holds graduation ceremonies at which the terrorist’s family receives a diploma.
All of these prisoners’ matriculation expenses are paid for by the “bankrupt” PLO–which is also (as we all know) paying them salaries for their terrorism.
That’s the way it works in Israel these days.
Kill or try to kill an Israeli (or as the Palestinians say “a Jew”), go to prison, receive a salary, and get a university degree.
It is simply disgusting.
