“A hole has opened up in the heart of the nation”:
The Murder of Rina Schenrav
The funeral notice yesterday for 17-year old murder victim Rina Schenrav. She was buried in her home city of Lod.
We could write today about yesterday’s attacks on Israelis throughout Judea and Samaria and along the Gaza border (114 explosives were thrown, 29 bombs planted along the fence, 3 border infiltrations took place), but they all pale in comparison to the horrific murder of Rina Schenrav outside of Dolev.
Rina, her older brother, and her father were all on a family outing to swim at a place called Danny’s Spring (named for Danny Gonen who was murdered there in 2015). As they walked down the path toward the spring, Palestinian terrorists detonated a bomb they had planted on the path.
Rina took the full force of the blast which tore apart her lower body. Her brother was seriously wounded, and her father less so.
She was declared dead at the scene.
What a wonderful young woman she was.

Even as her funeral was taking place, the PLO, Hamas, and Islamic Jihad all issued statements praising the “heroism” of the terrorists who blew her apart (the PLO called her “a Zionist soldier”). As usual, candy was handed out from Gaza City to Ramallah.
Rina’s uncle spoke at the funeral:
“There are moments of clarification. We understand how great is the struggle we are in, and how hard the war is. A war of love against hate and hope against despair. Light against darkness. We are all here to accompany our beloved Rina who was everything to us.”
As did her sister Tamar:
“We have been with you for almost 17 years, enjoying your goodness. We were privileged to learn from you how to always look for great answers. The hole that has opened up is not just in a family that has been destroyed, it is a hole that has opened up in the heart of the nation. Dear and beloved Rina, thank you for the years with you.”
Indeed a hole has been opened up in the heart of Israel.
A student from Malawi, who had worked with an Israeli health volunteer in his country battling AIDS, came up to us as we walked down the street in the UC-Davis Picnic Day Parade and wanted to carry the Israeli flag.
