The News on the Israeli Street

Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .

On the Gaza border:

As you can see from the breaking news ticker above, 4 mortars and 1 missile were fired at southern Israel last night. No physical injuries were reported; however, MADA treated many for trauma.

The mortar and missile fire precipitated an extended exchange of small arms fire–and on the Israeli side, tank fire directed as always at empty Hamas buildings and sand dunes on the periphery of Gaza.

Just after midnight, there was considerably more activity in Gaza covered in Today’s Blog below.

In Judea and Samaria:

*Palestinian terrorists threw 4 Molotovs at the security area at Karmei Tzur.

*Palestinian terrorists threw “rocks” and Molotovs at Israelis near Jenya, Kfar Azzun, the north Efrat Junction, near Tapuach, just outside of Ariel, Karnei Shomron, and at other locations in Gush Etzion.

Follow-up to yesterday’s blog:

It appears that tensions have lessened somewhat along the Lebanese border today with Hezbollah spokesmen saying that they will eventually respond to the attack on their building in the Dahiya suburb of Beirut two days ago–but that they are not interested in a war with Israel.

There is even a report that Hezbollah and Israel have agreed to a “partial ceasefire”: Hezbollah will not attack Israel from Lebanon, and Israel will not attack Hezbollah in Lebanon. Apparently both sides reserve the right to attack each other in and from different locations, namely Syria.

So what happened? Why the sudden change in tone?

For one thing, Hezbollah head Hassan Nasrallah has discovered that the “Hezbollah” terrorists killed in the Israeli effort to thwart an Iranian drone attack from Syria were not actually Hezbollah members. Instead, they were Shi’ite mercenaries recruited by Iranian general Suleimani to carry out the attack. In carrying out this recruiting, Iran went behind Hezbollah’s back.

For another, it has become clear that the Israeli attack in the Beirut suburb was targeting a “unique piece of missile hardware” and not specific members of the Hezbollah leadership–specifically Nasrallah himself.

IDF forces remain on high alert, but it seems that the threat of war has been walked back a bit.

The Israeli election campaign kicks off in earnest . . .

How can you tell, dear reader? Because on a night when war seemed imminent on the Lebanon border and the Gaza border, the Israeli news began with a 20 minute expose on how PM Netanyahu is “guilty” in Case 4000.

What nonsense.

As we have described it before, Case 4000 revolves around a deal that Netanyahu supposedly made to get favorable news coverage from Walla News. The entire 20 minutes last night described a supposed conversation he had with an associate back in 2015–a conversation for which there is no evidence except the word of the accuser.

The other problem with the accusation?

There is no evidence that Netanyahu ever received any favorable treatment from Walla.

Never mind any of this. It is now three weeks from the election, and all we will see on left-wing, mainstream Israeli television is the usual parade of accusations against PM Netanyahu and his wife.

It is beyond pathetic.

Who Killed Whom In Gaza Last Night?

A shroud of mystery has descended this morning in Gaza as Hamas tries to figure out what happened last night.

At around 12:52 am, two huge explosions were heard and felt as far north as our home here in Ashdod. Almost immediately afterward, Palestinian sources reported that three Hamas policeman had been killed.

The first reports were that two of those killed were riding on a motorcycle. In subsequent hours, this report seems increasingly unlikely.

Oddly, no one in Gaza jumped to blame Israel. Apparently there were no drones or jets in the area. Hamas suspicion immediately fell on Islamic Jihad which was also quick to deny responsibility.

In the last few hours, Al-Jazeera has reported that two suicide bombers blew themselves up, one beside a Hamas police station and the other at a police checkpoint at the Al-Dadaah junction in south Gaza. Whether this is true remains to be seen.

Imagine that. Hamas now has suicide bombers blowing up Hamas members in Gaza?

The new blame is now being directed at Salafists operating in Gaza. Guess what? A few minutes ago, Hamas returned to form blaming Israel for supporting the Salafists.
