3 Days Until The Election

The News On The Israeli Street

Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours in Judea and Samaria:

The roads of the area continue to be dangerous in the extreme as Palestinian terrorists throwing “rocks” and Molotovs attempted to kill Israelis on the Gush Etzion-Jerusalem road near the Efrat Junction, at Al-Aruv, Hawara, Psagot, near Givat Assaf, on the Yehuda Road near the bypass junction, beside Beitin, Thracomia, Pisgim, and Neve Tzuf among other places.

On the Gaza Border:

The scene all along the Gaza border yesterday and today.

The scene all along the Gaza border yesterday and today.

It has been another day of violent attacks at the border fence with terrorists lighting tires which obscure the view of our soldiers and spread contamination in the southern Israel. Is it any wonder that the children who live in the border communities suffer exceptionally high rates of respiratory problems?

Speaking of Palestinian terrorists . . .

In a case that has just come to light, 21-year-old Israa Ghrayeb became the 18th Palestinian woman killed this year by her male relatives in an “honor killing.” The murder happened three weeks ago.

What was Ghrayeb’s crime?

She posted a video online that showed her on a date in her home town near Bethlehem with a Palestinian young man who had just proposed marriage to her.

For this, she was tortured, slashed in the face with a knife, and had her spine broken by three of her male relatives.

Those relatives remain un-arrested. They claim that she was possessed by demons and suffered her injuries when she jumped off a second-story balcony.

And so it goes in Palestinian culture–a culture that women’s groups in the West embrace.*

TODAY’S and TOMORROW’S BLOG

A Pre-Election Drive Around Ashdod

(Please note that your humble servant will be in the Kineret (Sea of Galilee) area tomorrow and will return with a new blog on Monday, the day before the election).

The election is now only three days away, so your humble servant and his wife decided to take a drive around Ashdod today to document the campaign signage in the city.

So here goes:

The sign in the foreground is of Netanyahu riding Trump's popularity here and urging a vote for Likud. Gantz of Blue and White is in the background.

The large sign in the foreground is of Netanyahu riding Trump’s popularity here and urging a vote for Likud. Gantz of Blue and White (Kahol and Levan) is in the background.

Of course, there are many other varieties of signs plastered everywhere: at intersections, on buildings, and even on . . .

Blue and White (left to right): Yaalon, Gantz, Lapid, and Ashkenazi. Note how Gantz is out in front and Lapid (who is supposed to be the co-leader) is in the background.

Blue and White (left to right): Yaalon, Gantz, Lapid, and Ashkenazi. Note how Gantz is out in front and Lapid (who is supposed to be the co-leader) is in the background.

And as for Netanyahu, he is actively trying to siphon away votes from Lieberman by appealing to the Russian-speaking citizenry:

Vote for Netanyahu! (In Russian): that's Ashdod's new Assuta Hospital in the background.

Vote for Netanyahu! (In Russian): that’s Ashdod’s new Assuta Hospital in the background.

Ashdod has a sizable orthodox population; in the Ashkenazi orthodox neighborhoods, all you see are:

Vote for United Torah Judaism!

Vote for United Torah Judaism!

Whereas in the Sephardic neighborhoods:

Vote for Shas!

Vote for Shas!

One of my favorite juxtapositions is this one featuring former PM Ehud Barak of the Democratic Union (whose party is slipping in the polls):

Would you buy a car from Barak? Looks like most Israelis would not.

Would you buy a car from Barak? Looks like most Israelis would not.

But then again, the Otzma Party seems to have momentum and may get into the Knesset:

Ben-Gvir making the apparent point that he sides with Netanyahu. The truth is that Otzma is much further to the right than Likud.

Otzma head Itamar Ben-Gvir making the apparent point that he sides with Netanyahu. The truth is that Otzma is much further to the right than Likud.

On the other hand, the ultra-conservative Noam Party is virtually certain not to get into the Knesset. It advocates “traditional family” values–and its energetic young advocates have put signs everywhere including these over the highway:

xnoam

Another party that seems to be fading fast is the Labor Party with some polls suggesting that they might not make into the Knesset because Blue and White is cannibalizing the smaller parties on the left:

That's Amir Peretz, party head, in the middle.

That’s Amir Peretz, party head, in the middle.

We will end up this blog with one last campaign sign–this one of the man who wants to be the kingmaker, Avigdor Lieberman of Yisrael Beiteinu. Polls show him dropping a bit, but he may hold the balance of power after the election:

Lieberman is running on an anti-Orthodox platform.

Lieberman is running on an anti-Orthodox platform.

Of course these are not all the signs that we saw but just a representative sampling. Three days from now they will all be gone–and who will emerge victorious?
