*To support our soldiers in the Israel Defense Forces and our citizens who are in national service.
*To support the right of Israelis to make choices that affect their lives without interference from those who are not on the front lines.

TODAY’S BLOG:
55 to 54: Netanyahu Takes The Lead?
Remember that in Israeli politics, it’s never over until the fat lady sings.
It was just 5 days ago that Benny Gantz was standing on stage surrounded by Moshe Ya’alon, Yair Lapid, and Gabi Ashkenazi as balloons and confetti fell from the ceiling.
Gleefully, Gantz told the adoring crowd that the “mission was accomplished”, that the people had spoken, that he would be the next prime minister, and that his Kahol Levan (Blue and White) party would usher in a new era in Israeli politics.
It was all strikingly similar to Gantz’s premature victory declaration back in April.
What was also striking last week and in April was Gantz’s apparent misunderstanding of Israel’s electoral process.
As your humble servant has been writing for months, there is no way for the leftist Gantz to get to 61 mandates without the Joint Arab List and Avigdor Lieberman’s Yisrael Beiteinu joining his coalition.
It appears that Gantz finally got the message yesterday.
First of all, we were treated to the disgusting spectacle (all televised) of the stridently anti-Zionist, pro-PLO Joint Arab List declaring to President Rivlin that they recommend Benny Gantz to be the next prime minister. As we surmised yesterday, they recommend Gantz but refuse to be in his coalition. They want to lead “the opposition.”
This is called “wanting to have your cake and eat it too.” When have we ever had a political party recommend someone for prime minister and then in the same breath say that they will oppose him? One wonders how President Rivlin could listen to this nonsense with a straight face.
But there was more. It turned out that not all 13 Joint Arab List members will recommend Gantz. Later in the day, the 3 members of the Balad party in the List called Gantz a “terrorist murderer” and said they would definitely not recommend him.
Which means (remember that no mandate totals are official yet) that Gantz’s Kahol Levan + Labor + Democratic Union + 10 from the Joint Arab List = 54.
Which means that Gantz needs Lieberman (7 or 8 mandates) to join.
However, Lieberman made it clear yesterday that he belongs to the right and that he will never join with the Arab Joint List in any way. In Lieberman’s own words: “The Joint List is the enemy; it is a fifth column trying to destroy Israel from the inside; their place in the parliament in Ramallah, not in the Knesset.”
All of which is true. When it came time for Lieberman to talk with Rivlin yesterday, he recommended no one for prime minister.
Where does this leave us this morning?
The Netanyahu block has 55 apparent mandates; the Gantz block 54. How either block can woo Lieberman is anyone’s guess though one interesting idea floated yesterday was that Netanyahu and Lieberman should rotate the prime ministership between them–though how this would work with the ultra orthodox is unknown.
And so, Gantz and Kahol Levan made it known late last night that they now want Netanyahu to have first crack at forming a government.
On the other hand, rumors are circulating that Netanyahu will ask United Torah Judaism not to recommend him today because then Gantz would be forced to try to form a government.
Such is the topsy turvy world of Israeli politics.
