After a day of Trumpian tweets and declarations such as:
“it is time for us to get out of these ridiculous Endless Wars, many of them tribal, and bring our soldiers home.”
and
“we have one of three options: send thousands of troops and win military, strike financially in Turkey with sanctions, or mediate a deal between Turkey and the Kurds.”
and
WE WILL ONLY FIGHT WHERE IT IS TO OUR BENEFIT
I think we all know the answer to what Trump would do.
Nothing militarily.
It seems abundantly clear at this point that when it comes to military action President Trump (to turn Theodore Roosevelt’s famous dictum around) talks loudly and carries a small stick.
On the one hand, he is all in for imposing economic sanctions to try to get his way, but on the other he shies away from military action now that he thinks the IS threat has been removed.
At heart, Trump is an isolationist.
He would no more forge a military attack against Iran in response to the recent Iranian attack on the Saudi oil fields than he did when Iran shot down an advanced U.S. drone over international airspace.
He might send troops to Saudi Arabia, but he wouldn’t use them.
Similarly, he might supply military armaments to the Ukraine, but far be it from Trump to get involved militarily with Russia.
He would authorize the U.S. Navy to sail the south China Sea, but he would never engage China militarily.
Not that all of this is bad.
No one wants to start a war with anyone, and your humble servant thinks it is way past time for America to be perceived as the world’s policeman. Trump is completely correct when he says that American soldiers should not be dying to try to stop tribal conflicts which will continue long after the last American soldier is gone.
But what has happened over the course of the Trump presidency is that he has gradually become the military “hollow man”–mostly bluster and little bite. He is excellent at making gestures but paralyzed when it comes to using military force (ever more so after the departure of James Mattis as Secretary of Defense and the “defeat” of Islamic State).
Iran, Russia, and China must be frothing at the mouth as America leaves the stage to them.
