The News On The Israeli Street

From Gaza:

In the top photo, you see the Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh with his six sons–all well-attired. In the bottom photo you see 8 Hamasniks who lost their legs after being wounded while trying to kill IDF soldiers along the border fence.

The juxtaposition caption (which you cannot see) reads that the only people getting wounded in fighting against the “Zionists” are people from poor Gaza neighborhoods; the children of high-ranking Hamas officials never participate in the attacks.

To counter this, Hamas has put up a children’s park almost overnight near one of the staging areas for the fence “protests”: it has been given the name of “Homecoming Garden.”

Colorful with carnival-like structures, the park is meant to disguise the fact that Hamas regularly uses children to dig tunnels and act as human shields.

A Hamas spokesman had this to say about the new park: “The park is a message to our people’s life and continuity in the face of the occupation, that we are rooted in our land and cling to hope and life.”

Cling to hope and life? What theme did Hamas use to open the celebrations for the park yesterday?

“Our Martyrs.”

Also present was a table where young children could sign up to become Hamas members and presumably martyrs.

What are the protests all about?

The regular protests against government corruption targeting PM Netanyahu have been joined of late by protesters supporting Netanyahu. Every Saturday night now, the two sides clash.

A Bloody 24 Hours In Israel

Your humble servant doesn’t want this blog to turn into a rendition of the police blotter, but the sheer amount of violence that is now occurring here is appalling.

Most of the violence is taking place in Israeli-Arab areas, but hardly a day goes by without mafia hits and violent family brawls.

What follows is just what happened in the last 24 hours:

*There was a shooting on Gush Etzion Street in Haifa–mafia related.

*A 40-year-old Israeli-Arab man was shot in Ramle.

*Five Israeli-Arabs were wounded in a shootout in Jasser a-Zarqa–gang related.

*A 70-year-old woman was shot to death in Holon–not known if this murder was “domestic violence” or not.

A "die-in" in a park in Tel Aviv last night protesting the lack of action regarding violence against women.

*An Israeli-Arab man in his 20s was stabbed in Nazareth.

*There was a family brawl in Ashkelon.

*There was a brawl between two families in Manda–hundreds were involved.

*There was a brawl with numerous injured in Rasht.

If all of this wasn’t bad enough in the last 24 hours, here’s a recap of the carnage on the roads:

*A 2-year-old baby was run over in Rahat. He is in critical condition.

*A 65-year-old pedestrian was run over at Kastina Junction. He is in critical condition.

*A 19-year-old motorcyclist was hit by car on Arieh Shankar St in Holon. He has serious head injuries.

*A 35-year-old bicyclist was hit at the Cabri Junction. He has a severe head injury.

*A 34-year-old bicyclist was hit on Highway 89 beside the Ga’aton Junction. He is in critical condition.

*A 24- year-old bicyclist was hit by a car in Petah Tikva and is hospitalized with a severe head injury.

*A 10-year-old bicyclist was hit by car in Beersheva. He is hospitalized with “multi-system” injuries.

What is the answer to all of this bloodiness?

Obviously, the root of the problem is the mentality of the people. How is it possible that mafia hits, family brawls, and egregious carnage on the roads are not addressed in homes, schools, and public forums?

But also, the Israel police have to bear some responsibility. One rarely sees police on the roads here or in the more dangerous sections of cities and towns. Their seemingly laissez-faire attitude must be replaced by an aggressive attempt to address some of these problems.
