The News on the Israeli Street

Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .

In Judea and Samaria:

Hawara, Al Aruv, along Road 446, near Ofra, on Road 465 near Neve Tzuf, Kedumim, the Ofarim Junction, east of the Maccabim Checkpoint, Adam, Zubaidet, the Hevron Bypass road, the T-Junction in Gush Etzion: all of these were places where Palestinian terrorists assaulted Israelis with “rocks” and Molotovs.

Palestinian terrorists detonated an IED at the IDF post near Nabi Saleh. No Israelis were wounded.

Palestinian terrorists threw a grenade at the IDF post at Mevo Dotan. No Israelis were wounded.

On the Gaza Border:

Numerous explosive balloons have been launched–the furthest one has reached a “sensitive security facility” 60 kilometers from Gaza.

The Nirit Zamora case is finally resolved . . .

Regular readers of OneIsrael are acutely aware of the stabbing of Nirit Zamora. Several years ago, she was stabbed in the back by a Palestinian terrorist yelling “Allahu Akbar”.

She was stabbed so viciously that the handle of the knife came off of the blade–which penetrated her spinal column but miraculously missed her spinal cord by a centimeter. She was transported to the hospital for emergency surgery with the blade still in her back.

Then, a year ago, a Judicial Military Court ludicrously acquitted the terrorist of attempted murder because the moronic court said it was impossible to determine if the terrorist would have stabbed her again since his knife broke off in her back.

It sentenced the terrorist to 14 years in prison on a reduced charge of “causing serious injury.”

To say that Israelis were outraged over this miscarriage of justice is an understatement. The military prosecution appealed the sentence, and yesterday, a new sentence was handed down: 18 years in prison for attempted murder and payment of 500,000 shekels to Nirit.

TODAY’S BLOG:

The Corona Effect on Monday’s Election

Your humble servant has already suggested in previous blogs that Israelis may be suffering from election fatigue. Three elections in 11 months is likely to mean that voter turnout this time around will be less than in April or September last year.

Now it turns out that fears of the Corona virus may also keep a lot of people home, and in a country that has no absentee balloting, that will drive voter turnout further down.

How afraid are Israelis of going to the polls?

A poll taken by the Mano Gevo research institute in recent days suggests that as many as 400,000 registered voters may not want to go to a public place to cast a ballot. Specifically, those queried were asked: “Are you considering, or not considering giving up your voting right and not reaching the ballot box on election day due to concern about the Corona virus?”

6.5% of the respondents answered yes. Extrapolated, 6.5% of 6.4 million registered voters equals around 400,000 voters.

Who are the most afraid?

Surprisingly, young people between 18-34 years of age. Around 14% of them are seriously thinking about staying home.

Meanwhile, Corona panic continues sweeping the country. This morning came news that the MSC Lausanne, a huge cargo ship loaded with containers bound for Ashdod and currently docked in Limassol Cyprus, has been denied permission to come to Israel.

Why? Because one of its crew members was in South Korea recently and has not yet passed a 27 day incubation period now being demanded by health authorities.

In sum, it looks more and more that the results of this election will entirely depend on which party can get its supporters to the polls.
