The good news is that according to CEBM (the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine) at Oxford University, Israel still has the second lowest mortality rate in the world at 0.34  per 1oo confirmed cases. By contrast, Italy has a rate of 11.39, Spain 8.62, France 6.49, and the U.S. 1.8. Couple the above statement with the following one from Mickey Zohar of Likud, and you can see that PM Netanyahu’s apparent plans for forming a government with Benny Gantz are hitting turbulence:  “The unity government is important but not at all costs. 19 Knesset members from Gantz’s group should not receive 17 Ministerships!”

What Zohar points to is the same thing we pointed to in yesterday’s blog. In short, Netanyahu seems to have offered every single person in Gantz’s 15 person Resilience Party a Ministry or senior position in the government. What’s more he has offered 4 other people such as Amir Peretz of Labor and Orly Levy of Bridge ministries as well.

As you can imagine this is not sitting well with Likud Party members.

On top of this, despite the outpouring of governmental largesse that Netanyahu is offering, there are still fundamental disagreements between Netanyahu and Gantz:

1. Gantz refuses to apply Israeli sovereignty over the Jordan Valley and Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria even if Israel has American consent.

What does this tell you about where Gantz’s ideology lies and how unwilling he is to commit to Israel’s security?

2. Gantz refuses to go along with Yuli Edelstein returning to the position of Knesset Speaker because Gantz says that Edelstein disrespected the Supreme Court.

What does this tell you about how Gantz (who claims to be a centrist) kowtows to the left?

3. Gantz refuses to go along with Litzman remaining as Minister of Health. The problem for Gantz is that Litzman is ultra-orthodox.

What does this tell you about how inclusive Gantz actually is and how little he actually cares about unity?

In short, there remains a very rocky road on the way to an emergency unity government. Your humble servant has now doubt that Netanyahu will finally form one, but again we ask how far to the left will he take us?
