*As of 10 pm Sunday, here are 11,145  confirmed cases of Corona in Israel. 131 people are in critical condition on respirators. 105 Israelis have died.

*As of this morning, all Israelis are required to wear a mask when outside.

*Nursing homes continue to be hard hit. 24 residents of one in Bnei Brak tested positive this morning. You will recall that more than a dozen residents of a nursing home near Beersheva have died.

*PM Netanyahu continues to refuse to ban all incoming flights, preferring instead to have the Attorney General rule that all incoming passengers must go to a Corona Hotel.

What Is Rivlin Up To?

In an intriguing and surprising development today, President Rivlin announced that he would not grant Benny Gantz of the Kahol Lavan Party an additional 14 days to form a government. As you will remember, Gantz’s mandate runs out at midnight tomorrow (Monday) night, and Rivlin was widely expected to give him the usual additional time.

But no. 

And not only did Rivlin announce that he would not go along with 14 more days, he also made it clear that he would not offer PM Netanyahu the mandate as is traditional when the first person offered cannot form a government.

Instead, Rivlin said that he would immediately send the matter back to the Knesset where some Knesset member would have to come up with 61 supporters during the next 21 days or the Knesset will be dissolved again and another election will be called.

Almost immediately upon Rivlin’s announcement, a petition was filed at the Israel Supreme Court asking it to rule that PM Netanyahu cannot form a government because he is under indictment.

So where does this leave us?

Was Rivlin’s announcement a ploy to try to force Netanyahu and Gantz to agree to a national emergency unity government in the waning hours of Gantz’s mandate?

Was Rivlin’s announcement a ploy to bring about the denial of forming a government by Netanyahu either by the Knesset (of which Gantz is now the speaker) passing anti-Bibi laws or by the Supreme Court ruling Netanyahu is ineligible? Insofar as the Knesset is concerned, the question is whether Gantz has the 62 votes he had back in March (see Addenda below)?

Was Rivlin simply showing that he has reached the end of his tether and is ready to wash his hands of the whole government formation fiasco and wants no part of Netanyahu becoming prime minister?

Your humble servant believes that the answer–given Rivlin’s animus against Netanyahu–is the second choice above. However, perhaps Rivlin is just playing his last card to try to accomplish a unity government.

Addenda:

1. Early this evening, the Supreme Court dismissed the petition against Netanyahu–saying that it is premature because Rivlin has not handed over the mandate to Netanyahu.

2. Netanyahu’s “Right Block” has now increased to 59 as the head of Bridge Party, Orly Levi-Abekasis has just indicated that she has switched sides.
