The News on the Israeli Street
Good news on the Lebanon-Syrian border . . .
According to reports, an Israeli drone aircraft targeted Hezbollah commander Imad Crimi on the Syria-Lebanese border at Jdaidit Yabous yesterday:
More good news in Gaza . . .
A Hamas terrorist died yesterday as a result of an explosion in his house in Rafah. Apparently, he was working on explosives when they detonated.
And more good news along the Gaza border . . .
Three heavily armed Palestinian terrorists were captured as they attempted to infiltrate Israel.
Some bizarre news from the ongoing Duma trial . . .
Yes, believe it or not, the Duma trial concerning the deaths of the Dawabshe family 5 years ago is continuing during the Corona crisis having reached the point of summary arguments.
All along, your humble servant has declared that the trial is a kangaroo court. Last year, prosecutors actually agreed in court that the confessions obtained from the two defendants in the case were obtained by torture.
Nevertheless, the trial against one of them, Amiram Ben-Uliel, continued.
Yesterday, the prosecution bizarrely asked the Court to throw out the testimony of its own chief (and only) “witness” of the event on the basis that it was unreliable. Instead it asked the Court to keep and rely on testimony that the “eyewitness” gave 5 months after the event because it is connected with some elements of the Ben-Uliel’s so-called “confession”. By the way, the “eyewitness” is the cousin of the murdered man.
This is all so mind-boggling as to be downright incredible. A discredited “eyewitness” who gave a statement months after the fact is now to be believed because parts of his statement jibe with a confession that the prosecution admits was gained through torture.
Just unbelievable.
On the political front . . .
Is something in the wind tonight? After all, tonight at midnight is the extension deadline that President Rivlin gave Gantz and Netanyahu to come up with a national emergency unity government.

TODAY’S BLOG:
Corona, Corona, and More Corona
*As of 5 pm today (Wednesday), there are 12,200 confirmed cases of Corona in Israel. 132 people are in critical condition on respirators. 126 Israelis have died. 2,309 have recovered (please see “breaking news” above for updates to these figures as they are published by the Israel Health Ministry).
*44 elderly Israelis who were residents of nursing homes in Israel have died–a number that is expected to sharply increase in coming days with a major influx of such patients at Sha’are Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem. To date, 235 nursing home occupants and 97 staff members at the nursing homes are hospitalized with Corona. 22 more have just been diagnosed with Corona at the Adar Nursing Home in your humble servant’s home city of Ashdod.
*According to Deep Knowledge Group’s recent COVID-19 Countries Health Safety Ranking, Israel is doing the best in the world at dealing with the virus. In a ranking based on Quarantine Efficiency, Monitoring and Detection, Government Management Efficiency, and Emergency Treatment Readiness, Israel came out number 1:

*31,225 Israelis have received fines for disobeying Health Ministry guidelines in the last month–including more than 3000 in the last two days. These include penalties for not respecting social distancing, being more than 100 meters from home without necessary reason, and going to meetings of more than 2 people (such as praying in synagogues).
*People who were sent to Corona Hotels to recover from their illness are refusing to take a second test to verify that they have recovered. Why? Because they are enjoying their “all-expenses paid” time at the hotels. As of tomorrow, any person refusing such a test will be forced to pay regular room and food rates at their hotel.
*The amazing Yad Sarah organization which assists elderly and disabled Israelis in a wide variety of ways has raised 36 million shekels in public and private donations in the last month for the purchase of medical equipment–including 300 home respiratory units. The units were purchased in China, and there the units and other supplies sit at an airport. Why? Because the Israeli government is demanding that Yad Sarah pay the government 6.5 million shekels at a VAT tax on the materials–6.5 million that Yad Sarah does not have. Can you believe this?
