The News on the Israeli Street

The daily Corona update . . .

*As of 10 pm Sunday, there were 16,193 confirmed cases of Corona in Israel, a minuscule increase over the last 24 hours. 82 Israelis remain on ventilators–the same as yesterday. 230 Israelis have died, but 9,634 Israelis have recovered.

*These ten cities experienced the greatest increase in confirmed cases in the last 48 hours (in order): Jerusalem, Hura, Bnei Brak, Beit Shemesh, Modi’in Illit, Beitar Illit, and Petah Tikva. These localities account for 79% of the new cases in the last two days.

*To put all of this in a different way, there are currently around 6,500 active cases of Corona in Israel. Insofar as Jerusalem is concerned, there are currently 1,508 active cases–consisting of 1130 from the ultra-orthodox sector, 259 from the general public and 119 from the Arab sector.

*680 police reports were issued on Shabbat to people who violated Corona restrictions. Since the outbreak of the virus, 55,944 fines have been assessed.

*El Al will reassess the situation and possibly begin flying again to most destinations on May 15.

*A plan has been readied to completely open–with severe Corona restrictions– all parts of Israel including hotels, restaurants, cinemas, gyms, and other venues by June 1. Whether this will happen is anyone’s guess–and obviously depends on how the limited openings taking place now pan out.

Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .

Palestinian terrorists using IEDs, Molotovs, and “rocks” attacked Israelis between Hizma and Anatim, on the trans-Judea highway, on Road 465 near Deir Abu Masha’al, Abud, Tekoa, Mevo Dotan, and the Shiloh Junction, among other places.

Schools Reopen And The Court Is In Session

An elementary school student "checking in" this morning.

An elementary school student “checking in” this morning.

Elementary classes returned in the Jewish sectors of the country today with about 60% in attendance (180,000 out of 300,000). Your humble servant is making a distinction today between the Jewish and Arab sectors, because the Israeli-Arab sections of the country decided not to reopen schools today because the continuing threat of  Corona.

If you want to see a short, funny, video of elementary school kids giving a “welcome back to school chant” click on the the following Video of kids going back to school.

The simple fact is that the government was under intense pressure to open the educational system from parents who are unable to go back to work while their kids are at home. And given the fact that thankfully no elementary age children have succumbed to Corona, the Health Ministry and government relented.

Here’s what an elementary school classroom looked like in Israel this morning:

Note the masks and social distancing.

While 150+ schools were reopening, the Israel Supreme Court sitting in the form of the High Court of Justice 11-Justice panel, took up petitions raised by various groups which seek to deny PM Netanyahu the ability to form a government.

If you look closely, you will see glass panels between each Justice--and of course everyone today was wearing a mask.

If you look closely, you will see glass panels between each Justice–and of course everyone today was wearing a mask.

So how did it go?

Surprisingly, it appeared that the Justices are inclined to dismiss the petitions mainly because they are hamstrung. Israeli law specifically allows a prime minister to serve if indicted and even convicted and even longer until his appeals of a conviction end.

But one never knows with the ever rapacious High Court of “Injustice” which constantly arrogates non-existent powers to itself.

Tomorrow, the Justices will hear another set of petitions from groups opposed to the unity government arrangement that Netanyahu and Gantz churned out.

When will the Justices render their decisions? Some time before the May 7 deadline for a government to be formed.
