The News on the Israeli Street

The daily Corona update . . .

Yesterday saw an uptick in the number of confirmed Corona cases because of outbreak at the Rehavia Gymnasium (High School) in Jerusalem.

More than 1000 students, faculty, and even parents were tested yesterday with the result that 121 tested positive. As you can imagine, the school has been closed until further notice, and the outbreak was the main point in another Corona update from PM Netanyahu last night on Israeli television.

Netanyahu announced that we are not returning to a lockdown, but that we might return to one if Israelis insist on not following Health Ministry guidelines. Once again, photos of thousands of non-masked Israelis at the beach and elsewhere indicate that those guidelines are not a concern for many.

On a personal note, your humble servant ventured into downtown Tel Aviv yesterday to visit his daughter. On the relatively short walk from the Habima Theater where we parked, to our daughter’s apartment 3 blocks away, we saw only an occasional mask; most were walking around as if it was just another sunny day.

Ironically, the Tel Aviv police were also out and about yesterday handing out 5,000 shekel fines to 20 restaurants and cafes which were not adhering to Corona regulations. Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai blathered this: “I have instructed municipal enforcement agencies to work without compromise to implement the health guidelines. As we were determined in our position that business in the city should be opened to activity – so we will work resolutely for the protection of public health.”

What a joke.

The Corona figures for this morning:

17,012 Israelis have tested positive for Corona, and 14,811 of those have recovered. 34 Israelis are on ventilators, and 284 have died.

*A 32-year-old suspected terrorist was shot and killed in the Old City by Border Police.

The events that led up to this latter shooting remain foggy today, but the apparent sequence of events was:

1. Jerusalem police spotted the man with what they thought was a gun.

2. They called for him to stop; he did not.

3. He began running.

4. Various police and border police began yelling “Terrorist.”

5. There was an attempt to shoot him in the leg which failed.

6. He was then fatally shot.

7. A subsequent search of the man revealed no gun.

According to Arab reports, the man was a “special needs” individual who was “merely going to a special needs class” when he was spotted. That may be true, but in the past, all terrorists who have been stopped along the Gaza border and Lebanese border have been labeled “shepherds” by Hamas and Hezbollah, and many terrorists stopped in Judea and Samaria have been labeled as “developmentally challenged” by the PLO.

The policeman who shot the man is now under house arrest pending an investigation.
