What do you think you are looking at?

What do you think you are looking at?

Hold onto your hats. Transportation Minister Miri Regev announced yesterday that Israel will probably open ferry service in the near future between Ashdod and Tel Aviv–and between Hadera/Netanya and Tel Aviv. The purpose of the ferries would be to ease the massive traffic congestion in the Tel Aviv area.

What you are looking at above is the actual ferry schedule that has already been drawn up and is awaiting approval.

Ferry service is a great idea and should be extended all the way from Ashkelon to Rosh Hanikra.

The Absurd Security Incident At Har Dov Yesterday

For years now, we have seen how the IDF responds to terrorism emanating from Gaza. First, the General Command notifies Hamas that we are going to hit a “building”, “an observation post”, or “training ground ” (aka sand dune), and then we hit an empty building, observation post, or sand dune with a missile or artillery shell.

It is extremely rare for a terrorist to be killed or even wounded.

Why do we do this? Simply because the IDF is afraid of what the Hamas response might be if one of their members was wounded or, heaven forbid, killed.

Fast forward to yesterday,

At around 3:30 in the afternoon, an IDF “monitor” of the Combat Collection Battalion sitting at a computer screen spotted an armed group of 3-5 Hezbollah fighters infiltrating into Israel and advancing toward the IDF Gladiola outpost on Har Dov.

Immediately, according to the IDF spokesman, the IDF went into “massive” action firing  tank and artillery shells as well as machine gun fire.

However, none of the terrorist infiltrators were hit.

According to the IDF spokesman, the infiltrators then “fled” back into Lebanon.

Later, it turned out that the General Command had given an order that should group of terrorists be spotted, the terrorists should be fired “at”–but not in order to kill or wound them. Hence, the shells fired were “smoke shells” and the machine gun fire was merely directed over their heads or around them.

It was even reported, unbelievably, that the IDF had sent secret messages to Hezbollah the day before apologizing for the death of its commander in Syria.

So what was the IDF strategy?  “To contain” the incident–a strategy that Hezbollah figured out would be employed because of the way the IDF responds in Gaza.

If all of this wasn’t absurd enough, it also came to light later that one of the smoke shells hit a house on the Lebanese side that was not even close to the infiltration point.

So what is the bottom line about what happened yesterday?

First, a Hezbollah attack was thwarted.

Second, Israel’s deterrence has been further eroded; the entire world now understands the reticence of the IDF to use force against Hezbollah–because it is afraid of what the Hezbollah response would be.

Afraid of Hamas, afraid of Hezbollah, afraid of a Jordanian response on the Temple Mount or to sovereignty, afraid of the PLO response to stopping illegal Palestinian construction in Judea and Samaria: the IDF General Command is simply afraid.

One final point: this morning, it is being reported that the IDF has video documentation of what happened yesterday but is not releasing it out of fear that it might provoke Hezbollah into further action. It also may be true that the video is not being released because it is an embarrassment to the IDF and Israel.
