The News on the Israeli Street
The daily Corona (Covid-19) update as of 8 am this morning . . .
There are 160,368 confirmed cases—an increase of 4,764 since this time yesterday
118,570 of these confirmed cases have recovered—an increase of 3,572
524 are in critical condition—an increase of 5
143 of the most critically ill are on ventilators—a decrease of 1
1,136 have died–an increase of 17
There are 41,798 active cases.
Of the more than 30,000 people tested yesterday, the positive detection rate was 9.8%. Obviously, the most striking number above is the number of newly confirmed cases yesterday.
The following hospitals have told MADA that they are no longer accepting Corona patients because of lack of space and staff: Nahariya, Assuta-Ashdod, and Sha’re Zedek in Jerusalem. The two major hospitals reporting available space are Ashkelon’s Barzilai Hospital which still has 10 available beds in its 46 bed Corona ward, and Soroka Hospital in Beersheva which has 30 available beds in its 74 bed Corona ward.
In other hospital news, Rambam Hospital in Haifa reports this morning that 100 of its staff members have now gone into quarantine because of exposure to Corona.
The Duma saga comes to an expected end . . .
Amiram Ben Oliel was sentenced to three life terms in Israeli prison yesterday for his role in the deaths of three members of the Dawabshe family in Duma five years ago.

Despite the fact that the prosecution agreed that he was tortured into making a confession, despite the fact that the eyewitness account identifying Oliel was proven false, despite the fact that abundant evidence showed that the firebombing of the Dawabshe home was done by a rival clan in Duma, Amiram was given the maximum sentence.
In reality, he never had a chance as the Israeli government was determined to come up with a scapegoat. And despite the violation of every judicial norm, Amiram has no chance whatsoever in his appeal to the Supreme Court.
All in all, Amiram’s trial, conviction, and sentencing is one of the most disgusting episodes in the history of the Israeli judicial system.
TODAY’S BLOG:
“Serving The Palestinian Issue In Ways That Are Unimaginable Now”
Today is the big day.
Depending on what happens as a result the Agreement signing in Washington, it will either go down as a momentous day that blossomed into peace in the Middle East or a day on which Israel signed away its rights in Judea and Samaria, agreed to the Islamization of Jerusalem, and formally created a Palestinian state.
When your humble servant first learned of the Agreement between the United Arab Emirates and Israel, I pointed out that this agreement was most assuredly not “peace for peace.” It is land for peace again with the land this time being the land in the Israeli heart of Judea and Samaria. The Israeli government giveaway is already well underway with Jewish communities being razed, and illegal Palestinian construction in Area C being ignored.
I also speculated that the agreement would bring about the increased Islamization of Jerusalem (see our previous blogs about Emiratis buying properties in our capital).
Moreover, I speculated that as the UAE pours “investment money” into Israel, it will feel increasingly emboldened to pressure on Israel to make concessions to the Palestinians.
This morning the UAE’s assistant foreign minister proclaimed that “our peace with Israel will serve the Palestinian issue in ways that are unimaginable now.”
Indeed, they are unimaginable now because we have no idea what Benjamin Netanyahu has agreed to–or is agreeing to.
This morning we had a statement from the prime minister’s office that said that there is nothing unusual about our not knowing or the government not having spent 1 second discussing the agreement. The statement said that usual process is for an agreement to be signed, and then brought to the Cabinet and Knesset for approval.
Say what? Keeping everyone in the dark with no transparency may be the usual process for Netanyahu, but on a matter of this magnitude don’t we Israelis have a right to know what is going on?
Apparently not.
For example, we have no idea if the F 35 package is in the agreement or even if the Palestinian issue is addressed. According to Netanyahu’s office, the “details are still being worked out.”
On the other hand, the UAE seems to know exactly where we are headed. After his “unimaginable” statement, the assistant UAE foreign minister went on to crow exactly what we predicted—that the UAE will now be able to exert pressure on Israel to make concessions to the Palestinians.
Your humble servant suspects that we will not have the details of the “Abraham Accords” for a long time. All of the secret codicils will certainly not be available until long after today’s noon signing ceremony.
But as Israelis are taking their celebratory tourist vacations to Abu Dhabi and Dubai, they might want to reflect on what we have lost as a country.
